This study was carried out to analyze and learn the difference in balance and fall risk in relation to disease duration on the subject of stroke patients. 45 patients of stroke were divided into three groups - within 1 year, within 3 years and over 3 years after stroke onset. For each group, the same method measured balance and fall risk. Using TETRAX, 8 kinds of posture were measured for 32 seconds per each to analyze stability index, fourier index, weight distribution index and fall index. As the result, in the posture of standing on a solid surface with head forward and eyes closed and in the same posture with 45-degree left turn of head, the group of 1 to 11 months after stroke onset showed significantly higher stability index than the group of over 36 months(p<0.05). There was no significant inter-group difference in fourier index shown. In the posture of standing on an elastic surface with head forward and eyes open and the posture of standing on a solid surface with 45-degree left turn of head and closed eyes, the group of 1 to 11 months after stroke onset showed a significantly higher weight distribution index than the group of over 36 months(p<0.05). The group of 1 to 11 months after stroke onset also revealed a significantly higher fall index than the group of over 36 months(p<0.05). The result of this study indicates that with increase of disease duration, fall risk decreased, but that there were over moderate degree of fall risk found for all groups. To sum up, stroke patients are at the risk of balance instability and fall so, to prevent fall, they should continually be provided with balance-related treatment for diverse surroundings.
