The purpose of this study is to discover various functions of ‘-eulge’ and present Korean learners obvious usage of ‘-eulge’. To anyalyze pragmatic functions with a variety of contexts, the actual first-meeting conversation material, name of , was used. It was analyzed by dividing them into the 6 themes of to take the contexts of situation into account. This material showed the use of ‘-eulge’ a total of 60 times and 7 functions were discovered.
The basic meaning of ‘-eulge’ is ‘will in consideration of the listener’. The fact that the listener is taken into account makes the will less stronger and make politeness to be maintained even in the situation of refusal or request. It is very useful for Korean learners to learn ‘-eulge’ in order to prevent making pragmatic mistakes, especially in the confusion of ‘-eul geo si-’.
Since ‘-eulge’ not only serves various functions, but also has politeness in it, which is valued in korean society, it is necessary for textbooks to describe ‘-eulge’ with fully exact information of environment of its use. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes the functions of ‘-eulge’ and illuminate its usage environment.
It was possible to analyze seven functions in first-meeting conversation, which are [acceptance, (acceptance→)promise, euphemistic rejection, Notification, (Notification→)euphemistic cooperation request, consideration, (consideration→)promise]. [Promise] were two cases, one from acceptance in the context of demand premise, which is [acceptance], and in the context of non-requirement of listeners, which is [consideration].
The most important criterion for the analysis of ‘-eulge’ was ‘whether the listener's request was premised or not’. All the analyzed functions fulfilled in consideration of the listener, but in terms of which factors of the listener are considered, are different.
[Acceptance, euphemistic rejection, (acceptance→)promise] are used considering ‘requirement of the listener’ in the context of the premise of the listener's request.
[Notification, (notification→)euphemistic cooperation request] is used considering ‘effect on the listener’ and [consideration, (consideration→) promise] fulfilled their functions in consideration of the ‘will of the listener’.
When looking critically at the textbook descriptions of ‘-eulge’, based on the analysis result on chapter 3 and 4, they have problems in that the basic meaning of ‘-eulge’ was not fully explained and only a few functions of ‘-eulge’ are introduced, which prevents learners from correctly understanding and using ‘-eulge’ precisely. Therefore, it is suggested to present ‘-eulge’ several times in beginner, intermediate, and advanced level to encourage use of ‘-eulge’.
This study has significance in discovering various functions of ‘-eulge’ and the clarify usage environment. Of course, it is difficult to apply this to a situation where a friendly relationship has already been established, since this analyse was made through first-meeting conversation.
