발달장애 자녀의 도전적 행동과 부모의 자녀학대의 관계 : 양육부담감의 매개효과 The Relationship between Children’s Challenging Behaviors and Parental Maltreatment of Children with Developmental Disabilities : Mediating Effect of Caregiver Strain원문보기

Parental maltreatment of children with developmental disabilities is a clear symptom that shows the crisis of families suffering from various psychological and social difficulties. Accordingly, the exact causes and processes of parental maltreatment should be investigated in order to develop appropriate interventions. The purpose of this study is to verify the relationship between children's challenging behaviors and parental maltreatment of children with developmental disabilities and the mediating effect of parents' caregiver strain. The sample of this study is 144 parents with children under the age of 19 who were selected from the data gathered from 400 parents of children with developmental disabilities living in the capital areas in South Korea. The participants were surveyed from April to August 2018. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0 and the SPSS Macro program, PROCESS (ver.3.5). Reliability testing, frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, t-tests, chi-squared tests, ANOVA, correlation analysis, multiple-regression analysis and bootstrapping were conducted. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, 63.8% of all respondents reported that they had engaged in maltreatment of their children at least once in the preceding year. Specifically, 37.5% of respondents engaged in verbal aggression, 56.9% engaged in low-severity physical assault, and 23.6% engaged in high-severity physical assault. Second, children's challenging behaviors and parents' caregiver strain were both positively associated with parental maltreatment. Third, children's challenging behaviors were positively associated with parents' caregiver strain. Fourth, parents' caregiver strain fully mediated the relationship between children's challenging behaviors and parental maltreatment of children. Suggestions based on these results are as follows. First, practical interventions for decreasing children's challenging behaviors should be expanded. Integrated guidelines for offering positive behavior support are needed and networks and education programs for parents, teachers, and social workers should be developed to help them work together and effectively provide behavioral support. Second, public support for parents of children with developmental disabilities needs to be diversified in order to reduce their objective and subjective caregiver strain. In addition to quantitatively increasing the availability of existing care services, other services, such as support for coping with challenging behaviors, support for future planning, and psychological intervention for parents, should also be offered. Third, specialized care services for developmentally disabled children with more demanding challenging behaviors should be expanded. It is necessary to develop a system that guarantees the users' rights to choose the services regardless of the severity of their challenging behaviors. Fourth, different intervention programs for preventing parental maltreatment of children with developmental disabilities should be developed. Specialized systems for maltreated children with developmental disabilities should also be developed.
