The Relationship between Job Stress and Depression among Professional Military Personnel : Focusing on the Moderating Effects of Family Function원문보기

The proportion of career officers has increased within the military due to the reorganization of the military personnel structure. However, these career officers face mental health problems that are often not apparent because of their tendency to avoid counseling. Preventive approaches and empirical analysis to lay the groundwork for effective interventions are imperative in addressing this situation. This study aims to examine whether family functions have moderating effects on the relationship between job stress and depression among career military personnel. A total of 563 military officers and noncommissioned officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force were selected from the '2018 Survey on Mental Health of Military Officers' for analysis. The research model was examined using hierarchical multiple regression analysis after setting the independent variable as job stress, the dependent variable as depression, and the moderating variable as family function. The following are the main findings. First, statistically significant differences among groups were found for gender, military rank, economic status, health status, and the resilience level of occupational soldiers. Job stress and depression were higher for officers than noncommissioned officers, women than men, and those with lower health conditions, economic status, and resilience level. Second, job stress among career military personnel had a significant effect on depression, and family function had moderated this relationship. Higher family functioning indicated lower levels of depression and lower impact of job stress on depression. This study explored the mental health conditions of career officers and provided an empirical basis for enhancing the family welfare of military personnel. Based on the findings, this study suggests practical policy measures to improve the military family functioning, such as updating the existing counseling system and expanding welfare services to increase the level of happiness for families within the military.
