The effect of the AIDA model - applied tourism promotional video on the intention to visit tourist destinations - Focusing on “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” -원문보기

With the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a pandemic following the spread of the virus worldwide, and international travel getting banned or restricted, the tourism industry is facing its greatest crisis due to decrease in demand. It was under such circumstances—with travel demand limited to domestic destinations, and the subsequent increase in domestic tourism demand—that the government or local municipalities began to explore various promotional methods to effectively utilize tourism resources and attract tourists. While the prolonged pandemic has brought tourism to a halt, tourism marketing activities such as advertisements and promotion of domestic destinations have continued even in this time to sustain tourists’ interest and prepare for tourism demand in the post-COVID-19 era. One such activity carried out at the government level has been the production of tourism promotional videos—the “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” series, produced in 2020 by the Korea Tourism Organization, that gained huge popularity through SNS. Analysis of whether promotional videos of tourist attractions ultimately affect tourists’ visit intention is considered to be a crucial task. Therefore, this study established a research model using the AIDA model, which has been proven to be effective in the advertising field, as a theoretical framework and verified it through empirical analysis to understand the impact of the tourism promotional videos; the purpose was to identify the intention to visit the attractions shown in the “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” campaign, which drew global attention from August to December 2020, and to derive practical implications. To this end, a survey was conducted among Korean men and women aged over 20 who had seen these videos, and 337 valid responses were used for empirical analysis. The main results of this study are as follows. First, it was confirmed that viewers’ “attention” in tourism promotional videos could lead to their direct “interest” in these videos—that is, as the level of attention to the promotional video increases, so does interest in the video itself. It can thus be said that it is necessary to produce promotional videos that actively utilize various elements such as story, background, and music that can draw viewers’ attention. Second, when viewers’ “interest” in the promotional videos increased after viewing them, so did their “desire” to visit the tourist attractions shown in the videos. In particular, it was found that emotional involvement rather than cognitive involvement in the promotional videos had a greater impact on this desire. Taking the case of the “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” videos whose dance and background music went viral, since the desire to visit the tourist destination can be strengthened through increase in emotional involvement due to the interesting, fun, and pleasing characteristics of such videos’ music or contents, strategies that can increase emotional involvement should be employed while producing such videos. Third, “desire” affected visit intention. This suggests that if interest is created by watching promotional videos, it could lead to a final action through the psychological reaction “desire.” In conclusion, the results of this study show that increase in interest in the promotional video of a tourist destination strengthens the desire to visit that destination, which consequently intensifies the behavioral intention to visit—this could lead to actual visits to tourist destinations. Therefore, it is necessary to actively utilize various elements beyond simply stories that can generate sufficient interest in tourist destinations, such as background music and dance as seen in the “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” videos, in the production of promotional videos for tourist destinations in the future.
