Recently, interest in renewable energy is rapidly increasing due to depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problems. Research on hydrogen fuel cells is being actively conducted in Korea, and in particular, research and development for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are being accelerated. A hydrogen fuel cell vehicle requires power supply to activate the fuel cell stack during initial startup. In the conventional hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, a high voltage battery is used to activate the fuel cell stack, but there are difficulties in cost increase and development. Based on these backgrounds, a study on the activation of a fuel cell stack using a low voltage battery is required, and for this purpose, a study on the development of a BLDC(Bidirectional Low Voltage DC/DC Converter) is conducted in this study. In this paper, as a part of a high-efficiency and high-density study of BLDC with Buck/Boost converter and LLC resonant converter series structure, research on bidirectional CRM Buck/Boost converter digital control technique is presented. The bidirectional buck/boost converter applies MOSFETs to all power semiconductor devices for its operation and uses the MOSFET's body diode or synchronous rectifier mode during rectification. When the bidirectional buck/boost converter is driven using CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) operation, the reverse recovery current of the body diode causes a problem that the parasitic BJT inside the MOSFET conducts. When the parasitic BJT conducts, there is a problem that the breakdown voltage of the MOSFET is reduced by 50-60%. In order to overcome this problem, there is a method of using a power semiconductor device having a high breakdown voltage or a SiC power semiconductor device having a very short reverse recovery time. However, both methods have a problem in that the cost increases. In this paper, the bidirectional Buck/Boost converter applies CRM(Critical Conduction Mode) operation to improve the problem in the CCM operation. In case of CRM operation, since the body diode is turned off at zero current, no reverse recovery current occurs, so there is no parasitic BJT conduction problem. ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching) or valley switching is used to reduce switching loss, making it suitable for high-efficiency schemes. Although there is a dedicated analog controller IC for implementing CRM operation, it has been manufactured for the purpose of improving power factor. Also, studies on the existing digital CRM operation converter and the study of applying bidirectional operation have not been conducted. In this paper, as a part of BLDC research for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, it presents the research results of the bidirectional CRM Buck/Boost converter digital control method. This paper presents additional circuit for a control method and a bidirectional action that improves the shortcomings of conventional analog CRM converter. In addition, this paper presents a dead time design method optimizing ZVS and valley switching operation, a switching frequency limitation method, and a current controller design method considering digital delay. In order to verify the feasibility of the design, this paper designs a Si-MOSFET-based bidirectional CRM Buck/Boost converter and a SiC-MOSFET-based bidirectional CCM Buck/Boost converter with input 260-430V, output 160-240V, and 1kW rated capacity to compare the performance respectively by making both of prototypes. The Si-MOSFET-based CRM Buck/Boost converter achieves an efficiency of up to 99.6% in Buck operation and 98.7% in Boost operation under rated load conditions. Although there is a difference in efficiency according to voltage and load conditions, it is confirmed that SiC-MOSFET-based CCM Buck/Boost converter demonstrates the same performance.
