The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the efficient operation and management of small-scale village sewage treatment plants in rural area. For this purpose, in this study, a test run operation was conducted for a small village sewage treatment plant that adopted the sequencing batch reactor(SBR) process, the FNR process combining the activated sludge process with iron electrolysis, the MBR process combining the activated sludge process with membrane separation, and the SNR process based on the biofilter process. Based on the test run results, the treatment efficiency and operating cost of each process were compared and analyzed. As a result, it was found that all of the small-scale village sewage treatment processes subject to the test run can treat the influent water to a level that satisfies the effluent standards. The average treatment efficiency of sewage treatment processes was BOD 97.2~99.1%, T-N 75.8~89.3%, and T-P 81.4~91.1%. The difference in treatment efficiency for each process showed variability within an acceptable range. The facility maintenance cost and energy consumption such as replacement of parts by each method were high in the order of MBR≥FNR≥SBR>SNR, and the ease and stability of operation were high in the order of SNR>MBR≥FNR≥SBR. In conclusion, the more important factors in selecting a sewage treatment process for a small-scale village sewage treatment plant in rural areas are the ease of operation and economic feasibility. Regardless of which process is chosen, the way to increase the efficiency of sewage treatment is to understand the characteristics of the process and develop operational knowledge and technology through regular job training education for facility operators.
