The eutrophication of freshwater ecosystems has resulted in an increase in population of algae, which has a negative impact on the health of aquatic ecosystems as well as the use of water. As part of the biological water quality improvement method, this study analyzed the characteristics of the filtration function of Unio douglasiae, which is widely distributed in freshwater ecosystems, and suggested the possibility of water quality improvement through the reduction of Cyanobacteria. Although the filtering rate tended to decrease, the algae reduction rate increased with increasing shell length. The filtering rate and the algae reduction rate ranged between –0.02 - 2.17 L/gAFDW/hr and 1.6–61.1 ㎍Chl.a Ind./hr for different shell lengths. The filtering rate and the algae reduction rate at high water temperatures (25–35°C) tended to be higher than those at the low water temperatures (5–15°C). The filtering rate and the algae reduction rate of U. douglasiae according to the dissolved oxygen level (0.5, 4.5, and 9.0 mg/L) was no significant difference owing to dissolved oxygen concentration, and the effect of dissolved oxygen on filtration activities was estimated to be low. For algae concentrations (15.0–506.7 ㎍/L), the filtering rate in each experiment was observed to be high at lower algae concentrations. The algae reduction rate tended to be higher at higher algae concentrations, but was observed to decrease above certain concentrations. At a mussel density of 0.07, 0.17, and 0.20 Ind./L(30L), the filtering rate showed a similar trend, ranging within 0.07–0.09 L/gAFDW/hr. The algae reduction rate was higher at density less than 0.17 Ind./L. The filtration rate and algae redcution rate of U. douglasiae according to the location depth (20, 50, and 80 cm) was good at 50cm depth. The algae concentrations and the algae reduction rate in the Sinku reservoir and Seokmun mesocosm showed a slightly lower or similar tendency compared to indoor experiments. This study analyzed the filtration rate characteristics of U. douglasiae with respect to environmental conditions. It demonstrated the powerful filtration characteristics of U. douglasiae. Thus, it was confirmed that the use of U. douglasiae could reduce algae populations in eutrophic lakes and improve the biological water quality.
