This study aims to identify the ways in which homeless individuals escape homelessness and remain out of street. The results suggest the importance of the system that provides individuals with psychological support and human resources to achieve emotional stability in the process of escaping homelessness and not to return to homelessness. This study interviewed eight people who escaped from homelessness among those who participated in the local self-help center to conduct a qualitative case study. Through interviews and field participation observations, the results of the study, which looked at how their surroundings affect the sustainability of their exiting homelessness, can be summarized into the following four points. First, forming relationships with social welfare agencies was important in remaining out of street. Results suggest that it is important the person in charge of social welfare facilities for homeless individuals formed raport with those who are exiting homelessness, which then provide them with psychological and emotional stability, and confidence in future success. Second, after visiting the resident's residence in person and analyzing the on-site observational data, the relationships participants had with renters or housing managers worked as a social support as well as a social control. Participants lived in various small one-room residential facilities, where the actual related housing costs were 10-20% higher than the state-funded housing subsidies. The fact the recipients did not afford housing expenditures works as a social control in which the participants had to behave well and have good relationships with housing owners or managers, but the network established in this process also worked as a social support for participants. If tenants are paid rent or need medical support due to illness, the social welfare service connection was also made available by housing managers. Third, for participants who exited homelessness, family support, peer support, and religious support are important social support that provides physical, informational, and emotional support. Participants who were homeless had up to two to five colleaguesat at the time of interview. Information sharing and support shared among homeless colleagues was very strong and this functioned as a strong social support, although their drinking together so often may be harmful in some cases. Because of this social support, if one gets a temporary housing without a new social support in the new residennce, one might return to street. The study also found the importance of experiences of marriage in the past, which encouraged participatns to stay out of streets, All these cases show the importance of social support. Providing the homeless housing is important, but more fundamental de-homelessness policy involves psychological and emotional de-homelessness, as well as human service network. To encourage de-homelessness, it is important to provide public assistance and social services, as well as customized counseling services for each homeless person, so not to allow homeless individuals to pass through the revolving door again and return to street.
