Although spatial perception is essential for improving design competence, the lack of appropriate educational tools has prevented its instruction in academic contexts. Hence, students majoring in urban design and architecture struggle with identifying space characteristics. As “sense of scale” is one of the most influential des ign competence factors among spatial perception abilities, this study aims to verify the effectiveness of VR-aided sense of scale training using a Solomon four-group design approach. We recruited 40 first- and second-year university students majoring in physical planning and conducted street-level sense of scale training, as well as pre- and post-tests. We measured sense of scale accuracy using mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)(difference between the actual and reported values) and compared each group’s average MAPE using a t-test. The results showed that only two training sessions can contribute to acquiring a sense of scale. Additionally, the participants felt that VR technology is more effective for scale practice than traditional teaching methods(post hoc questionnaire). As this study reveals that VR can serve as a practical educational tool, we suggest adopting VR education for subjects that are difficult to teach with the existing educational tools.
