From the viewpoint of the museum’s effort to communicate in the form of a new technology convergence, this study analyzes the ecosystem of technologically converged services in domestic museums. In other words, by examining the changes made to the museums through technology convergence, we aim to explore the museum’s future operating environment that differs from the past. To achieve these objectives, we established the following three research questions.
Research question 1. What does the technologically converged ecosystem of Korean museums consist of, and who are the interest groups? Research question 2. How does a museum build and derive a technologically converged service within the ecosystem? Research question 3. How does a museum connect with the audience or visitors through the technologically converged service?
To analyze the interrelationships with stakeholders within each analysis unit, we designed four separate studies and drew conclusions by synthesizing the findings from each study. The designs and results of the individual studies are as follows. First, Study 1 looked at digital infrastructure governance as the foundation of a technologically converged ecosystem of a museum. To analyze the digital infrastructure governance of a museum, we classified the digital infrastructure into information resource, information technology, and information interactive. The following is the result of examining the governance as an interactive relationship between the policy-related stakeholders in the domestic museum environment in terms of these three types of digital infrastructure. In terms of digital infrastructure, the National Museum of Korea was found to have a strong internal competency. In terms of information interactivity, however, the National Museum of Korea remains at the basic competency level as an individual institution, inevitably influenced by the external environment. The information resource area, which is gradually increasing in importance, was found to be merely managing the information of the relics in the collection. It appears that more investment in related infrastructure is needed. In the meantime, we discovered that it is not easy to increase the infrastructure investment in the information resource area for the National Museum of Korea because national cultural heritage is co-managed by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Creative Content Agency. In the digital environment, information technology and information interactive areas develop, inevitably forming a close relationship with each other centering on digital information resources. This shows that it is imperative to build a more proactive collaborative relationship between external stakeholders than the current collaboration structure. Second, to analyze the technologically converged ecosystem of the museum, we used a Viable System Model, which is based on Organizational Cybernetics (OC) and analyzed the structure of the technologically converged service management within the National Museum of Korea. In terms of policy system (System 5: Policy), we found that the institution’s orientation presented a clear direction for technologically converged services. As an organizational structure to support the policy (System 4: Intelligence), the Department of Digital Museum was newly launched, proving that the structure of a meta-level organizational unit for implementing the technologically converged service was in place. As an operational system that supports the meta-structure, the Department of Relic Management is supposed to control and manage the organization (System 3: Control). However, the department is merely performing the role of allocating the related budget rather than controlling and managing the overall converged services. In this vein, it is hard to conclude that the execution structure of technologically converged services is perfectly well managed. For efficient execution, the institution is moderating the management and execution of services in the departmental unit and with the head of the research department (System 2: Coordination). It was found that, through such support, technologically converged services are being implemented in individual units of each research department. For user analysis, which is the remaining unit for analyzing the technologically converged ecosystem of the museum, we designed two studies, focusing on the cases selected in the preliminary survey, and analyzed the user interaction experience with technologically converged services at the museum. First, we analyzed how the affordances that elicit the actions of the audience in digital media exhibition affect the audience's immersion (as a cognitive experience) and satisfaction (as an emotional experience), mainly among the audience for digital media exhibition. We analyzed the correlation between affordances and viewer experience after dividing affordances into space affordances and sensory affordances, and classifying the viewer's experience into immersion and satisfaction. The result showed that sensory affordance had a positive (+) effect on both the viewer's immersion and satisfaction. As for space affordance, it was found that it exerts a positive (+) effect on the viewer’s immersion while exerting a negative (−) effect on the viewer’s satisfaction. Next, we analyzed YouTube user comments and categorized the user experience with online exhibition services. After collecting comments from six YouTube videos of “Firepower Joseon” created by the Jinju National Museum, which is the subject of the study, we classified the comments in terms of recognition, evaluation, and involvement. Then, we divided the user experience of YouTube content into the following five categories: recognition of the content, evaluation of the organization’s brand image, evaluation of the content quality, knowledge sharing about the content, and providing expert knowledge about the content. Of these categories, “recognition of the content” and “knowledge sharing about the content” were the most frequently observed, followed by “evaluation of the organization and the content.” This shows that the online experience of the museum through YouTube content generated user experiences such as sharing information about content and enhancing the brand image of the institution. Through the ecosystem analysis of technologically converged service in domestic museums, we can derive a new museum management paradigm as follows. First, the museum ecosystem of technologically converged services operates through the cooperation of the museum’s internal and external governance resources and capabilities. To operate museums, receiving many more resources externally than before is inevitable. However, the influence of external resources is only for maintaining the homeostatic equilibrium of the museum operation. To this end, it is necessary to improve the internal capabilities to use the external resources. In terms of museum operation, it is necessary for the institution to have a systematic operation to develop external resources as its own operation model. The meta-level organizational units—policy and intelligence—establish the future direction of the organization by actively accepting these external influences. Meanwhile, the execution unit develops and realizes technologically converged services that internalize external resources, while maintaining organizational homeostasis. What is important here is the intermediate organization that connects and controls the meta-organization and the sub-organization (the executive organization). At present, the role of an intermediate organization is not clear within the National Museum of Korea. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to establish an organizational design that takes into consideration the control and management organization for developing the technologically converged services of the future. To be specific, we witnessed that the systematic operation of the museum contributed to the creation of a new exhibition service. The exhibition service as a stage of executing details can be expanded to the development of new services through active use of various private resources. The internal competency of a museum rests in observing and analyzing how these new services interact with “users” and reflecting the findings for operating the technologically converged services. The operation of a museum can thereby be made sustainable. The significance of this study is that it is the first study to investigate the new management model for museums from the viewpoint of the ecosystem of domestic museums in response to sociocultural change such as digital transformation. Although we conducted four individual studies and combined the findings, this study also has limitations in terms of methodology because the ecosystem viewpoint has to consider multiple domains simultaneously. Nonetheless, this study is still significant in that it presented a new analysis method for museum management models from the perspective of museum management (museum science or museology) and from the perspective of technology conversion. Even though this study could not examine the environment of all domestic museums by limiting the research subject to the National Museum of Korea, it is hoped that the methodology will be used for follow-up studies on various museum operation models and operation environments from an ecosystem perspective.
