Environmental issues such as global warming are being discussed, and sustainable biomass is attracting attention as a substitute for petroleum resources. Among them, wood-based biomass lignin, a by-product of wood pulp processing, is an inexpensive and renewable resource that is gaining popularity as an alternative resource in various fields. In particular, lignin has high carbon content and aromatic properties, so it can be used as a carbon precursor, contains phenolic OH groups, and is used as a stabilizer and water-based dispersant due to its excellent colloidal properties. In this study, lignin was used to conduct research on a high value added carbon materials. First, activated carbon fiber was manufactured using kraft lignin. The impurities of lignin were removed through a purification process using hydrochloric acid, and the pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) generated in the naphtha cracking process was dissolved using a plasticizer and then a precursor was prepared through thermal polymerization. The precursor was melt-spun to make inexpensive carbon fibers. After the stabilization reaction, we finally produced a low-cost activated carbon fiber through a steam activation process. Carbon nanotubes have high mechanical properties and high electrical and thermal conductivity compared to other isotopes, so they are used in the fields of lithium ion battery electrode materials, hydrogen storage, and various polymer composite materials. In the next chapter, an effective approach to dispersing CNTs in aqueous solutions using Lignosulfonate lignin and its application has been confirmed. After dissolving lignin in an aqueous solution, CNTs were dispersed through ultrasonic treatment, and the supernatant was separated through ultracentrifugation to prepare a dispersion. As a result of the optical analysis, the carbon nanotubes were individually separated, and absorption and luminescent peaks due to chirality of each tube could be confirmed. In order to evaluate this as an electrode of a supercapacitor, a compound was obtained by freeze drying CNT in which lignin was dispersed. The composite was made of activated carbon with only a simple carbonization process. Manufactured activated carbon was used as an electrode for super capacitors in aqueous electrolytes, and its electrochemical performance was verified.
