The purpose of this study is to discuss the disparities between the standard forms of English loan words that we use and the actual sound recognition of those words in English. The listening experiment was conducted with English loan words with schwa, through the actual voice of a native English speaker who is working at Chonnam National University as a professor.
One hundred students who are in elementary, junior high, and high school participated in this experiment. That was the writing test in Korean after listening to the recorded voice of the native English speaker. The experiment consisted of a total of thirty English loan words with schwa and the time required was about eight minutes.
First, in the analysis of nasal onset, voiced fricative onset, and voiced plosive onset, Changing loan word sounds with schwa and short vowel forms in Korean, with changing sounds into diphthongs, has been confirmed that there is a possibility of a problem in the listening comprehension of English loan words.
Second, in the analysis of voiceless fricative onset, voiceless plosive onset, and vowels, the schwa phenomenon, as well as the change of short vowel sounds into long vowel sounds in actual English pronunciation, and changes in syllables were also investigated.
Third, in the part of the study examining nasal coda, voiced fricative coda, voiced plosive, voiceless plosive, and vowels, we examined the perception of dark-L, the change of the coda due to -aspirated, and the schwa of each vowel position.
Fourth, in the part of the analysis based on English syllables, the schwa and the composition of syllables in two-syllable words and three or more syllable words were compared. In this part, various types of syllable composition such as schwa+short vowel, schwa+long vowel, and schwa+diphthong were compared.
Based on this analysis, in this study, the disparities between the standard forms of English loan words and their actual sound recognition were identified, and problems were pointed out. In addition, a combination of standard and practical orthography was proposed, English phonetic symbols were specified in textbooks, and the resulting problems were also mentioned. I proposed the notation of English phonetic symbols after English loan words as a complement to those problems, and the limitations of this study were also mentioned.
