Bioaerosols are particulate matter (PM) of biological origin, including airborne bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In particular, some bioaerosols not only adversely affect individual health in the form of toxic reactions and allergies, but also threaten public health in the form of infectious diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), influenza A (H1N1), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019). Understanding the characteristics of bioaerosols and researching antimicrobial agents that can control bioaerosols are essential for public health protection. This doctoral dissertation presents experimental investigations on the behavior and vitality of bioaerosols, and researches on visible-light-activated (VLA) antimicrobial filters/surfaces that can effectively control bioaerosols.
Prior to the development of antimicrobial air filters, research was conducted on the physical and biological characteristics of bioaerosol filtration. The survivability of bioaerosols in commercial face masks, which became a precious commodity through the recent pandemic, was evaluated. Commercially purchased N95, KF94, KF80 grade, and surgical face masks were loaded on the mannequin head, and exposed to Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli bioaerosols under various environmental conditions of airflow rate and humidity. The filtration efficiency against bacterial particles varied from 82 to 99% depending on the grade. The average survival ratios of filtered S. epidermidis and E. coli were 14% and 9%, respectively. These results indicate that while face masks can effectively prevent the physical penetration of bioaerosols, the filtered biological particles can maintain their vitality. However, uncertainty remains over some details related to the face masks, such as the possibility of bioaerosol transmission and the possibility of secondary transmission depending on the types of face masks. After processing the face mask filters to a certain size, loaded into the filter holder, and exposed to S. epidermidis bioaerosols. Subsequently, the filters were separated for each layer to quantify the microbial viability. As a result, the average survival ratio of captured microorganisms was >13% regardless of the face mask type, and an overwhelmingly high survival ratio was confirmed in the filtration layers compared to others (44-77%). In addition, the survival of microorganisms was confirmed in the inner-layer in contact with the respiratory tract (99.9%. In addition, to verify the durability of VLA antimicrobial performance, the filters were exposed to the light for a long period (72-hr). As a result, the antimicrobial efficiency of the filters exposed to light was >99%, confirming the high chemical durability of the coating agents. Furthermore, the filtration efficiency could be improved by applying the chemical properties of the coating agents to triboelectric. The filtration efficiency for viral aerosol (MS2) was improved by triboelectric charge to ~94%. Finally, by analyzing the type of ROS generated via visible-light reaction, the antimicrobial mechanism could be qualitatively identified. The VLA antimicrobial tile that can control the growth of microorganisms was investigated. The tile was fabricated by thermocompression bonding (250℃) of polyethylene (PE), TiO2, and graphene oxide (GO). In this process, the GO was reduced to graphene (G) and then, absorbed into the composite (PE-TiO2@G). The content of graphene varied from 0, 0.5, and 1 wt%. To determine the physical properties of the tile, the mechanical tests of the Taber abrasion test (ISO 9352), the durometer hardness test (Shore D; ASTM D2240), and the Izod impact test (ASTM D156) were conducted according to relevant standards. The VLA antimicrobial performance was verified using microbial-contain droplets. When visible light (9.5 mW/cm2) was exposed for 24-hr, the VLA antimicrobial performance of PE-TiO2@G (1 wt%) was ~99.999%. VLA antimicrobial activity against MS bacteriophage was also confirmed, and the antimicrobial mechanism was identified through the analysis of the generated ROS characteristics. The studied antimicrobial tiles are expected to be applied to living spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms, where microorganisms can easily proliferate.
