Recently, MXenes, a two-dimensional (2D) materials family of transition metal carbides or nitrides with the representative as titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx), have been discovered and showed great potential for many fields. The latest reports demonstrated that the presence of MXene in nanocomposites enhanced the performance of their applications. However, to broaden the scope of applications and understand the role of MXene in nanocomposites, the nanocomposites based on MXene need to be more adequately studied. This dissertation focused on the development of Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites for 3 main applications: (1) electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, (2) electrical sheet heater, and (3) electrochromic (EC) smart window. Besides, the effect of Ti3C2Tx on enhancing the performance of Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites in their applications will be clarified. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the chemical structure, electrical properties, and synthesis methods of Ti3C2Tx MXene and Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites. Their applicability in fields is summarized. Also, the mechanism of EMI shielding, electrical sheet heater and EC device are presented. The role of Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite in these applications is surveyed through recent reports. Chapter 2 presents a multifunctional EMI shielding skin based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) intercalated Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (NSs)/ Graphene foam (GF)/ Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (Fe3O4@Ti3C2Tx/GF/PDMS) composite, which showed an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) and can act as a pressure sensor. The remarkable EMI performance of this composite is due to high conductivity, magnetic loss, and interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the susceptible electrical resistance change under external pressure made the composite become a promising pressure sensor. To fabricate large-size EMI shielding films, an electrically conductive composite ink is reported in Chapter 3. This composite ink, which is eco-friendly, is a mixture of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and heat-treated Ti3C2Tx MXene in waterborne polyurethane (WPU) matrix. Through the doctor blade printing method, composite films with various thickness were fabricated from the ink, showed a remarkable EMI SE owing to an excellent electrically conductive network between Ti3C2Tx and CNTs. In addition, this composite ink was used to print electrical sheet heaters with excellent Joule heating performance. Chapter 4 presents an application of Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite in optoelectronic, where Ti3C2Tx played an essential role in significantly reducing the charge transport barrier within EC devices. The EC smart window based on the WO3/Ti3C2Tx hybrid film, fabricated by the spray-coating method, exhibited a significantly enhanced EC performance with a high optical modulation, a high coloration efficiency (CE), fast switching response time compared with bare WO3-based EC device. The performance of applications such as EMI shielding, sheet heaters and EC devices was significantly improved by using Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites, and the crucial role Ti3C2Tx in each application was investigated detailly. I believe that my research will be the impetus for the widespread application of MXene nanocomposites in the manufacturing industry.
