The Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale - Global Rating Method (SCORS-G) is a coding system that assesses the cognitive and emotional aspects of interpersonal functioning in narrative materials. This study aimed to validate the Korean version of the SCORS-G using cards from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; cards 1, 2, 3BM, 4, 13MF, 12M, 14), to provide interpretation guidelines for various samples, and to suggest how to utilize and apply the SCORS-G across a variety of clinical and research settings. Study 1 aimed to validate the Korean version of the SCORS-G using the TAT cards, verify the validity of Levels of Personality Organization (LPO) using the overall SCORS-G composite rating, and explore methods of its application. The Personality Assessment Inventory, NEO-Five Factor Inventory, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale, Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale, Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) and TAT were administered to 215 undergraduate students. The reliability and validity of the SCORS-G were tested by rating TAT protocols according to the scoring criteria. The level of inter-rater reliability for eight dimensions of the SCORS-G was mostly acceptable. Based on existing literature, a two-factor model consisting of the cognitive and emotional factors was established and its model fit was verified using confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, the model fit was good, which suggests that the factor structure of the SCORS-G is valid. The cognitive and emotional factors of the SCORS-G showed a significant correlation with various psychopathologies, personality traits, interpersonal problems, cognitive distortions, and emotional dysregulation. Also, SCORS-G variables were significantly associated with MASC scores. More specifically, each dimensions and factors of the SCORS-G were positively correlated with accuracy of social cognition and negatively correlated with error counts representing deficits in theory of mind. Additionally, the differences of various psychological and personality functioning were analyzed among three LPO groups which were categorized according to the overall SCORS-G composite rating. Consequently, there were significant differences in various psychopathologies, personality traits, and maladaptive problems among the different LPO groups. Moreover, significant differences according to LPO were found in MASC performance. In the university student sample, as LPO ascended by one level, the degree of psychopathologeis and maladaptive psychological problems decreased, and stability of personality traits and abilities in social cognition increased. These results suggest that the SCORS-G can be appropriately used in the evaluation of LPO. Study 1 provides an interpretation guideline for the clinical utility of the SCORS-G based on present and previous studies and discuss the clinical implications and limitations of this study. Furthermore, this study discusses how to utilize and interpret the SCORS-G in assessing LPO by connecting the empirical results with theoretical LPO. Study 2 aimed to explore the factor structure and assess the criterion-related validity of the SCORS-G in a nonclinical adolescent sample as well as contribute to the development of a set of norms. In addition, its purpose was to confirm the validity of LPO using the SCORS-G global score ratings of TAT narratives. The TAT and various scales measuring interpersonal, cognitive and emotional problems, psychopathologies and personality traits were administered to 138 high school students and the standards of the SCORS-G were presented. Also, the reliability and validity of the SCORS-G were verified. By comparing the SCORS-G ratings of the sample in this study and those of previous studies, the study found that levels of moral concerns, aggression, self-esteem, and self-cohesion within the adolescent clinical group were significantly lower than the general group. Moreover, levels of self-esteem and self-cohesion tended to increase, following a development path from high school students to undergraduates. The eight variables of the SCORS-G exhibited good to excellent inter-rater reliability and internal consistency. As the result of an exploratory factor analysis, the eight SCORS-G dimensions were classified into cognitive and the emotional factors. Neuroticism, interpersonal cognitive distortions, emotional dysregulation, and interpersonal problems were significantly associated with both cognitive and emotional factors, while personality pathologies and treatment related variables were significantly associated with the emotional factor in the adolescent sample. Furthermore, through analyzing psychological differences according to LPO using the SCORS-G in the high school student sample, it was found that LPO 2 and 3 showed better functioning than LPO 1 in psychological and personality domains. Based on the study's results as well as those of precedent studies, the instructions, guidelines and note for using the SCORS-G to adolescents were discussed. Study 3 aimed to understand the relationship among the cognitive and emotional aspects of representations, emotional dysregulation, and interpersonal problems. The Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale, short form of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales, and TAT were administered to 415 undergraduates, and TAT narratives were rated by the SCORS-G. Based on this, a structural equation model was designed and verified. In the model, the cognitive and emotional aspects of representations affect interpersonal problems by mediating difficulties in emotional regulation. As a result, the analysis revealed that the cognitive and emotional aspects of representations have an effect on difficulties in emotional regulation, which lead to interpersonal problems. Also, the cognitive aspects of representations were found to directly influence interpersonal problems. The underlying cognitive and emotional processes that organize interpersonal experiences directly and indirectly affected difficulties in emotional regulation and interpersonal problems. These results suggest that interventions focused on alleviating emotional dysregulation as well as improving psychological mindedness can effectively lower interpersonal problems. Based on the results, the usefulness and implications of evaluating the intra-psychic processes in the context of interpersonal relationships were addressed in the discussion. In summary, the SCORS-G appeared as a rating system with high reliability and validity that assesses various psychological functioning related to personality, interpersonal relationships, cognition, and emotions. According to the results and discussions of this study, the SCORS-G can be used in the following ways for adult and adolescent samples: effectively assessing LPO based on the overall SCORS-G composite rating, capturing detailed and delicate psychological functioning through an eight-dimension analysis, and understanding the underlying personality dynamics in a structured way. Furthermore, by evaluating the underlying cognitive and emotional processes that organize interpersonal experiences using the SCORS-G, clinicians can understand that these aspects affect psychological problems such as emotional dysregulation and interpersonal difficulties, and consider appropriate interventions accordingly. This study will provide useful information for clinicians and practitioners engaged in mental health settings; it will guide the use of the SCORS-G with regards to psychometric properties and assist the interpretation of its results. This will be beneficial to evaluating and understanding psychological processes and personality functioning. It is hoped that, starting with this study, many clinicians and researchers will apply the SCORS-G in various ways in both their practice and research.
