This study aims to develop psychological and affective interventions for adults experiencing symptoms of social anxiety. Toward that end, this study examines the effect of socially prescribed perfectionism on social anxiety, and verifies the sequential mediating effect of self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking. Based on the findings, this study seeks to understand the psychological process and characteristics of psychological difficulties experienced by adults suffering from social anxiety, and build a basis for effective and appropriate counseling approaches for these adults. To that end, an online questionnaire survey was conducted with male and female adults aged between 20 and 64 residing in Korea. A total of 439 respondents participated in the survey. Then, a correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between variables, and a structural equation model was used to verify the sequential mediating effect of self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking in the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. The findings indicated significant correlation between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety, self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking. In addition, self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking were found to have statistically significant sequential mediating effect on the effect of socially prescribed perfectionism on social anxiety, However, socially prescribed perfectionism did not have significant direct effect on social anxiety, which means that self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking fully mediates the effect of socially prescribed perfectionism on social anxiety The contribution of this study lies in its examination of the mediating effect of self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking on the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety, and the path through which ocially prescribed perfectionism affects social anxiety through the mediation of self-focused attention and repeated negative thinking. By way of conclusion, this study discusses its implications on counseling practices for adults suffering from social anxiety, the significance and limitations of this study, and proposals for further studies.
