The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of socially prescribed perfectionism and distress overtolerance in the relationship between parents’ psychological control perceived in the early adulthood and depression. For this purpose, an Internet survey was conducted on men and women in early adulthood (19 to 29 years old) in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and across the country to collect data from a total of 300 people. The measures used were Psychological Control Scale-Youth Self-Report, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Distress Overtolerance Measure. SPSS 26 was used to identify demographic characteristics and to investigate technical statistics and correlations between variables, and AMOS 20 was used to investigate the suitability and research model of the measurement model. Bootstrapping was performed to verify the significance of total, direct, and indirect effects, and the significance of individual and double mediating effects was verified using phantom variables. The summary of the results of this study is as follows. First, as a result of correlation analysis between major variables, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between parents’ psychological control perceived early adulthood and depression, socially prescribed perfectionism, and distress overtolerance. Second, it was found that socially prescribed perfectionism mediated the relationship between parents' psychological control and depression. Third, it was confirmed that socially prescribed perfectionism and distress overtolerance were double mediated in the relationship between parents' psychological control and depression. The results of this study are significant in that they confirmed what variables affect the relationship between parents' psychological control and depression and expanded the understanding of those variables. In addition, based on the research results, suggestions for major implications, limitations, and follow-up studies were discussed.
