Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic material has excellent physico-chemical properties for semi-permanent application. TiO2 is classified into brookite, anatase, and rutile phases, and photocatalytic properties appear on rutile and anatase. Among them, an anatase phase having a stronger oxidation energy than rutile is widely used as a photocatalyst. Also, TiO2 has currently been in the spotlight for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and improving water quality because of photolysis resistance. However, TiO2 has a band gap of 3.2 eV which limits its photocatalytic reactivity only in the ultraviolet region. It is of necessity to improve light absorption capacity of TiO2 to a slightly longer wavelength. This is achieved by modifying the TiO2 heterojunction by supporting it on long-lasting phosphor, and doping with transition metal. Sr4Al14O25:Eu2+,Dy3+ long-lasting phosphor emits light for a long time using phosphorescence phenomenon. In this research, photocatalyst composite material was synthesized by supporting TiO2 and transition metal copper (Cu) on long-lasting Sr4Al14O25:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor powder. An aqueous TiO2 solution was synthesized using a titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) precursor by a hydrothermal reaction in Teflon lined autoclave. For TiO2/phosphor heterojunction modification, Cu solution was impregnated on phosphor prior to TiO2 hydrothermal coating. To overcome the limitations of submicron powder-type material in photocatalysis, the phosphor catalyst support was also fabricated as beads-type and coated with Cu and TiO2. The beads-type composite material was additionally coated with a SiO2 on the intermediate layer of TiO2 and phosphor bead to suppress the powder detachment phenomenon. The photocatalysts were analyzed for morphology and crystallinity characteristics using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and BET specific surface area. The optical characteristics of the composite material were evaluated by UV-VIS spectroscopy and light emission through PL equipment. Photocatalytic properties of composite materials were analyzed under ultraviolet (λ = 365 nm) and visible light (λ > 410 nm) through a methylene blue pollutant and using gas-chromatography (GC) analysis. Photocatalytic reaction rates varied according to the concentration of copper and hydrothermal coating conditions. In the bead-type composite material, the reaction rate depended on the amount of zeolite used as a binder. Titanium dioxide coupling with Cu-doped phosphor support enhances photocatalysis reaction to occur even in the visible region to mitigate pollutants.
