As the industrial environment diversifies with technological development, development of new materials that exceed the properties of existing alloys is required. Among them, a high entropy alloy is characterized by mixing five or more different elements in a similar fraction to form a single phase rather than an intermetallic compound. Due to its high configural entropy and severe lattice distortion effect, it has excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, and is attracting attention as a new material that can overcome the physical property limits of existing alloys. Among the various high-entropy alloy compositions, the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy, which is the first high entropy alloy found, is in the FCC single phase and is known to have high elongation and strength by easily forming twins due to low stacking defect energy. There are various processes of manufacturing high entropy alloys, but among them, the powder metallurgy is a process of manufacturing a product through diffusion by applying heat and pressure to powder, and it is possible to suppress a non-uniform microstructure that may occur in a casting process, thereby having excellent mechanical properties. In the case of a powder manufactured through the atomizer process, an alloy having vary good formability can be manufactured by using the smallest powders. In this research, correlation between the microstructure and mechanical characteristics of the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy and design of bimodal structure were systemically characterized. By using the gas atomization and spark plasma sintering process, homogeneous microstructure with different grain size without chemical segregation and micropores was achieved. As for the mechanical properties, the strength of the 8.37 μm alloy with the smallest grain size was the highest at 347.08 MPa, which showed superior properties than the alloy manufactured by the existing casting process. Comprehensive studies on the strengthening mechanisms of the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy were conducted to understand fundamentals on the mechanical properties. Strengthening mechanisms according to the alloy powders size were proposed with various factors such as potential reinforcement, grain refinement, solid solution strengthening, and Orowan reinforcement. In addition, in order to enhance the driving force for sintering process and improve mechanical properties, a bimodal structure was designed. Large powders of 75-106 μm and small powders of 25 μm or less were mixed in various mass ratios to prepare an alloy having a bimodal structure, and mechanical properties and reinforcing instruments were analyzed. The strength of the alloy with the produced bimodal structure was 490 MPa when the mass ratio of the coarse particles to the fine particles was 2:8, and the strength was increased by suppressing plastic deformation starting from the fine particles during deformation.
