This study attempted to confirm the possibility of Hamamelis virginiana leaf extracts as a natural material for functional cosmetics. Anti-oxidant, whitening, and anti-inflammatory effects were confirmed, and the stability of the formulation was confirmed by applying it to O/W cream. DPPH radical scavenging activity was measured to confirm the anti-oxidant effect of the extract. High scavenging activity of 69.8% similar to that of control ascorbic acid was confirmed at a concentration of grater than or equal to 2.5%. To confirm the anti-inflammatory effect, NO production inhibition was measured in Raw 264.7 cells, and the inhibition rate was 45.8% at 5% concentration. In HaCaT cells, we measured the inhibition rate of TARC and MDC, which are well known atopic inflammatory factors. At the 5% concentration, the inhibition rates were 81.4% and 88.2%, respectively. On the other hand, low tyrosinase inhibitory activity and melanin production inhibition rates in B16F10 cells seem difficult to expect whitening effects of extracts. O/W cream was prepared to find out the stability of Hamelis virginiana leaf extracts in the formulation. Appearance, color change, odor, hardness, pH, and emulsified particle size were measured for 3 months at temperatures of 25°C, 4°C, 45°C, 50°C and cycle. The change with the passage of time was no rapid changed within the baseline for 3 months at all temperatures. These results confirmed the excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Hamamelis virginiana leaf extracts, as well as the possibility of being a good natural cosmetics material that can be used to improve atopic skin, which has recently become increasingly interested.
