The purpose of this study was to develop cultural product design
using relics from the Beijing Palace Museum in China. To this end, a
case analysis was conducted on the existing cultural products of the
Beijing Palace Museum, which has been developing and producing
various cultural products, to identify problems, and to investigate
design preferences for consumers in China and Korea. To this end,
this study developed a cultural product design using the collections of
the Beijing Palace Museum through literature research, case analysis,
and surveys of Koreans and Chinese.
The design of cultural products shown through case analysis was
based on high saturation and vivid colors such as red, gold, black,
and blue in the past, but recently designed cultural products have
increased the frequency of using paletones, and have high preference
for soft and elegant designs.
The results of the survey on cultural products showed that the
main buyers of cultural products were in their 20s and 30s, and there
was a difference in design satisfaction according to marital status,
which increased the factors considered by married people and
compared more conditions. Contrary to the expectation that the
difference in average value would be significant, there was generally
no difference between groups, which was found to be purchasing
regardless of income because the majority of cultural products were
purchased for souvenir purposes, not daily necessities.
Based on these results, this study derived design elements for the
design of cultural products at the Beijing Palace Museum. Through
case analysis, cultural product design elements were selected in
consideration of design changes, color use changes aimed at overseas
markets, color changes, Chinese cultural product symbolism, and
museum collection images.
Prior to design development through design elements, the Chinese
museum's direction of improving the design of cultural products is as
follows. First, it is necessary to design cultural products for various
age groups, not cultural products for some classes, and second, it is
necessary to improve the design of cultural products that emphasize
the symbolism of the museum's collections. Third, it is necessary to
improve the design of cultural products aimed at overseas markets in
the design of cultural products limited to the inside of China. Fourth,
it was considered that there is a need to improve design in which
the trends and trends are fused without using only design elements
that only Chinese people preferred.
Reflecting the direction of cultural product design, this study
proposed cultural product design by obtaining motifs from four
collections representing the Beijing Palace Museum in China.Including
Blue and white jade twelve zodiac signs, cloud and dragon-shaped
satin robe, red plum magpie pattern square plate,The motif was
obtained from four collections and a cultural product design was
proposed. Cultural product design focused on three aspects:
symbolism of collections, product diversity, and consideration of
entering overseas markets. In addition, the selection of cultural
products selected 10 cultural products that are currently sold the most
at the Beijing Palace Museum. The selected cultural products are
cups, badges, files, hand wallets, T-shirts, tapes, umbrellas, key rings,
phone cases, and scarves.
The cultural product design proposal presented in this study can be
said to be highly valuable as a basic study in the development of the
design of multiple museums in China in the future.
