Application of Semiotic Musical Analysis - with an Analysis on Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op. 27 No. 1 and Op. 101원문보기

The goal of this research is to analyze structure of classical music and to interpret it in common practical language based on semiotic musical analysis. This study focuses on “Pastoral topic”, which is the main musical topic in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op. 27 No. 1 and Op. 101. In these works, pastoral topic combines with other topics and gestures, and the synthesis of these elements creates new meanings and narrative structure. Semiotic interpretation of classic music is based on musical topic theory. Musical topic theory, which was established by Ratner, is study on music through social and historical context. Topic theory interprets expressive elements of music such as melody, dynamic, and articulation, which were overlooked from the perspective of formalism through topics and gives new meanings. Research on semiotic musical interpretation has been actively conducted so far, and it is becoming more justified and effective as an analytical methodology. “Pastoral topic” originated from ancient poetry literature and has been used as a symbol of the peace of nature and utopia in Western arts. In music, pastoral topic is presented both in vocal and instrumental music. Vocal music highlights the rural lyrics and atmosphere through expressive elements, and instrumental music emphasizes the acoustic imitation of the sound of the nature or folk music idioms. Specifically, the characteristics of pastoral music can be identified as Sicily rhythm of 6/8, 12/8 beats, bright major keys, sequential melody of the pentatonic(or five-note) scale, and triad harmonies. Drone-bass and clear cadence are also characteristics of pastoral music, and these elements makes lyrical atmosphere. In Op. 27 No. 1, pastoral topic unfolds as internal reflection in nature and peaceful atmosphere, and it conveys the emotions such as “confidence and determination”. On the other hand, pastoral topic in Op. 101 brings out the confrontation between heterogeneous marches and fugal styles, and it also symbolizes “victory and transcendence”. Through semiotic analysis of the two sonatas, we can see how the pastoral topic combines with or opposes to various expressive elements, and how this process leads to “The Pastoral Expressive Genre”. Semiotic analysis of music helps understand the music more definite and express it with specific words. Therefore it provides objectivity for the subject feeling on music and enhances the communicative power of music and musicians.
