This study explores scientific concepts in the play area of the 3-year-old creative class of daycare center. It is an implementation study to revitalize play-oriented science education through linking. The goal is to find effective ways to operate science education by looking at the changes in children. Research questions according to this study are as follows:
Q. 1: How is the process of action research carried out to revitalize play-centered science education for 3-year-old creative class children at daycare centers?
Q. 2: What are the changes that appear to teachers and children through the process of action research to revitalize play-centered science education for 3-year-old creative class children at daycare centers?
Accordingly, the researcher conducted an action study for approximately 12 weeks from May to July 2021, targeting 15 3-year-old creative class children at S Daycare. Data was collected and analyzed through participation observation, photo and video recording, teacher journal writing, and daily child care diary evaluation and analysis. The results of the study analyzing the cyclical process of planning-execution-observation-reflection are as follows.
First, the first, second, and third implementations were carried out in terms of teachers and educational activities in the implementation process for revitalizing play-centered science education in the 3-year-old creative class.
First, in the first implementation process from the teacher's perspective, the teachers tried to increase their confidence in science education by changing their thoughts about science classes. In the second implementation process, various channels such as participation in ‘real science in the classroom’ education and literature reviews and footnotes that expanded children’s scientific thinking were used. In the third implementation process, efforts were made to form an open atmosphere where children can voluntarily participate in science experiments.
In the first implementation course, in terms of educational activities, children could experience various scientific concepts of physical science through play, related to 'force and movement', which can be easily accessed by young children. Under the theme of 'Physics, let's play!', one of the scientific concepts, activities were planned and executed. In the second implementation process, ‘color mixture play’ in which children’s interest is ‘color’ was applied to ‘mixture’, a part of chemistry, was conducted, and children’s free exploration and exploration play was encouraged. In the 3rd implementation process, children were allowed to discover science play on their own through 'water play,’ the characteristics of physics, chemistry, life science, and earth science were naturally fused with each other.
Second, the changes shown to infants and teachers through action studies for the revitalization of play-centered science education in the 3-year-old creative class are as follows.
First, in the terms of teachers who are researchers, researchers' sense of efficacy in science teaching increased, and they were able to actively prepare for high-quality science play and increase the scientific knowledge of researchers. In addition, through various data exploration, experimentation, and trial and error; the researcher transformed into a teacher who researches and strives to establish a connection with various classes.
Next, in terms of infants, interest in science play increased, and new play was created through repetition of various science games. In addition, in the process of discovering scientific knowledge in everyday play and sharing new scientific knowledge with friends, verbal interaction with peers was expanded. Through this process, infants are transformed into children who naturally think scientifically and enjoy science play in their daily life.
