With increased global consumption of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a sustainable recycling process is necessary to reduce wastes and retrieve highly-valued elements. But to achieve an optimized sustainable recycling process, a fundamental understanding of the thermokinetic reactions during pyrometallurgical LIB recycling is essential. In this work, the thermodynamics and kinetics of high-temperature reactions for LIBs during pyrometallurgical recycling are studied using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) equipped with a gas mass spectrometer.
Fundamental thermokinetic study on a waste LIB with a composite pellet Waste LIBs are disassembled into its individual constituents of the cathode and anode active materials, which were compacted into cylindrical composite pellets. Five distinct steps could be distinguished from the mass loss and the corresponding DTG curves. The complex reduction steps and corresponding gas analysis, the optimal temperature range for Co and Li retrieval during LIB pyrometallurgical recycling was identified to be between 880-1200°C. Using the isoconversional method for kinetic analysis, the effect of temperature indicated a single-step rate-determining mechanism with an activation energy of 165.8 kJ/mol within the temperature range of this study. Although the kinetic models related to the topochemical receding interface and pore diffusion show better agreement compared to the uniform internal reduction, the moderately high activation energy and the BSE images of partially reduced samples clearly show that the uniform internal reduction is prevalent and rate-determining at the temperature range of this work. In addition, the BET surface area did not significantly change at α = 0.6 and 0.9, further reinforcing the reaction to be controlled by uniform internal reduction.
Thermochemical analysis for the reduction behavior of LIB for mobile phone The waste LIBs employing LiCoO2 to cathode and C to anode were partially sliced and analyzed. From the complex reduction steps and corresponding gas analysis, the optimal temperature range for valuable metal retrieval during LIB pyrometallurgical recycling was identified to be between 722-1200°C. Temperature dependence for reduction of composite pellet was analyzed at 650, 750, 800 and 850 °C in Ar. As the temperature increased, the dominant reaction, i.e. rate-determining mechanism, changed from direct reduction to indirect reduction, so the reaction rate much faster. . Using the isoconversional method, the effect of temperature indicated a muti-step rate-determining mechanism with an average Eα of 104.76 kJ∙mol-1 (STDEV: 20.05) within the range of α = 0.19 - 0.79. Effect of temperature on reducing behavior in reducing atmosphere was analyzed at 650, 750, 800 and 850 °C in mixed CO2-CO mixture. From the noticeable variation of Eα value from 14.01 to 225.91 kJ∙mol-1, reducing behavior was divided into two regions involving the low activation energy and the high activation energy. This result was originated by change of the reaction mechanism from diffusion controls to chemical reactions.
Thermochemical analysis for the reduction behavior of LIB for electric vehicle Spherical [NixCoyMnz](OH)2 precursors of powder mixed with Li2CO3 from RIST and graphite were compacted into cylindrical composite pellets. Five distinct steps could be distinguished from the mass loss and the corresponding DTG curves. From the complex reduction steps and corresponding gas analysis, the optimal temperature range for valuable metal retrieval during LIB pyrometallurgical recycling was identified to be between 870-1300°C. Temperature dependence for reduction of composite pellet was analyzed at 750, 800, 850 and 900 °C. As the temperature increased, the dominant reaction, i.e. rate-determining mechanism, changed from direct reduction to indirect reduction, so the reaction rate much faster. Using the isoconversional method, the effect of temperature indicated a muti-step rate-determining mechanism with an activation energy of 181 - 238 kJ∙mol-1 and 167 - 223 kJ∙mol-1 within the temperature range of this study. Since NMC 8 samples were composed of high Ni and low Mn contents, which caused structural instability, so the activation energy decreased as reaction proceeded, however, the activation energy kept high in NMC 6 samples. These fundamental results can potentially be used in optimizing and developing a continuous and cost-effective pyrometallurgical process to retrieve the highly-valued metal species and concentrate the Li into the by-products during the reaction, which could increase the sustainability of LIB recycling in future applications.
