Low earth orbit (LEO) inter-satellite networks can provide global communication services. However, as the data traffic load increases the probability of handover (HO) failure and new call blocking will become more frequent, which will highly influence the Quality of Service (QoS). A HO failure results in a disconnection of an ongoing data session, which is considered more disturbing to its users than a new call being blocked. Thus, network service providers may prioritize HO support over a new call connection if only one of the two could be conducted in high traffic load conditions. HO frequently occurs in LEO inter-satellite networks as the satellites move much faster than the users on earth. LEO satellite Dynamic beamwidth and guard channel control (LEO-DBG) scheme is proposed to improve the QoS during HO and reduce the blocking probability of new calls. The simulation results show that the proposed schemes can significantly improve the QoS during LEO inter-satellite HO, even under high traffic conditions.
