This study was performed to better understand the experiences and the changes in aspects of successful aging among elderly who practiced silver taekwondo, a program teaching taekwondo to elderly. In particular, this study focused on the physical, psychological/emotional, and social aspects of the study participants and aimed to investigate the successful aging benefits they experienced through silver taekwondo training. To achieve the research purpose, this study addressed the following research questions: First, what kind of physical experiences of successful aging do the elderly have through silver taekwondo training? Second, what kind of psychological and emotional experiences of successful aging do the elderly have through silver taekwondo training? Third, what kind of social experiences of successful aging do the elderly have through silver taekwondo training? This study was conducted using a qualitative research method, and three seniors aged 65 years and older who participated in the silver taekwondo program of the Senior Welfare Center E located in C city of Gyeongsangnam-do participated in the study. In-depth interview, non-participant observation, and class research journals were used for the specific data collection methods, and the collected data was analyzed using an inductive category analysis to better understand silver taekwondo practitioners' experiences and changes in aspects of successful aging. The silver taekwondo classes were held twice a week for 60 minutes, and the program consisted of various contents that would interest the elderly and give them a sense of achievement while paying attention to their health and safety. Activities included warm-up exercises, basic movements, kicks, poomsae (sequential movement patterns), self-defense techniques, demonstrations, and cool-down exercises. The results of this study were as follows: First, the elderly experienced positive changes in the physical aspect of successful aging. By participating in the silver taekwondo classes for a long period of time, the elderly gained confidence in their own body movements, which improved their physical self-efficacy, and their subjective health status improved through this positive perception and improved evaluation of their own health. In addition, they showed a high level of satisfaction in appearance care, saying that they would continue to take care of themselves in the future for their own benefit. Second, the elderly experienced positive changes in psychological and emotional aspects of successful aging. Through silver taekwondo training, their sense of self-achievement of setting goals and striving to achieve them improved, and their self-esteem also improved through positive self-evaluation, such as confidence in themselves and satisfaction with themselves. Third, the elderly experienced positive changes in the social aspect of successful aging. Through silver taekwondo training, they felt positive changes in the communication and relationships with family members, showed satisfaction in their family and child relationships, and experienced positive changes in their relationships with others as their confidence and leadership skills improved. They also showed a high level of feeling happiness in their present lives as they more actively participated in social leisure activities through solidarity with fellow members with whom they practiced silver taekwondo. Considering these changes, it can be understood that the silver-taekwondo training was a good opportunity for them to have a positive experience and gain successful aging benefits. It is hoped that silver taekwondo will be further revitalized in the future with the development of more silver taekwondo programs for elderly health and welfare. Furthermore, it is expected that various follow-up studies will be conducted that can help the elderly lead happy and successful aged lives while maintaining their mental and physical health.
