This study aimed to investigate the persuasion effect when a corporation becomes a subject of environmental communication, informs about environmental issues and induces changes in people's behavior with fear appeal messages in a situation where the plastic pollution is getting serious. This study examined whether the fear level of the message(high vs. low) and the frame of damage caused by the plastic pollution(individual vs. nature) mediate the perception of threat and efficacy, thereby increasing the intentions of eco-friendly behavior, and how it influences attitude toward the corporation based on Witte’s EPPM(Extended Parallel Process Model), which explains the persuasion effect of the fear appeal message. In addition, it was verified whether the persuasion effect was different when the eco-guilt that people usually had about environmental problems interacted with the fear appeal messages. Based on the research objectives above, a 2×2 between experimental design was employed on 256 adult males and females. When the fear level of the message was high, perception of threat and efficacy was increased then the intention of behavior was increased too. However, when the frame of damage was individual, the intention of behavior was increased, but the perception of threat and efficacy were not mediated. The intention of behavior promoted by fear appeal message finally formed attitude toward the corporation positively. In addition, the greater the eco-guilt, the higher the intention of behavior, and the greater the persuasion effect when exposed to a message with a high level of fear. Through these research results, there was the implication of trying to apply the EPPM to envrionmental communication, and this study proposed that the corporations should do environmental communication actively and using fear appeal messages could be effective.
