Recently, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are expanding from portable electronics devices to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) which demand high energy density and safety. Since a lot of energy is stored in mid- to large-sized lithium-ion batteries, it is critical to maintain stability and safety of LIBs. The combustible liquid electrolytes currently used in commercial lithium-ion batteries have high volatility and flammability, which poses a risk of battery fire or explosion. Therefore, if a solid electrolyte such as a solid polymer electrolyte or a ceramic solid electrolyte is applied to ensure battery safety, the battery safety problem can be fundamentally solved. Among them, ceramic solid electrolyte is a material that can secure battery safety because it has a non-igniting property. Ceramic solid electrolytes prepared in the form of pellets by compressing ceramics have significantly poor cell characteristics than liquid electrolytes because of their high grain boundary resistance. In order to reduce the grain boundary resistance, a sintering process at a high temperature is necessary. Such a ceramic solid electrolyte in the form of pellets has a disadvantage that the interfacial resistance with the electrode is large and it is difficult to increase the area. In this study, a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is prepared by compounding a conductive ceramic capable of conducting lithium ions and a polymer and a small amount of liquid electrolyte to improve the problems of the ceramic solid electrolyte. Composite solid electrolyte is manufactured in the form of a film using a NASICON-based ion conductive Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramic and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer, and a small amount of carbonate liquid electrolyte is added to reduce the resistance between the surface of the composite solid electrolyte and the electrode and between the ceramic particles. The composite solid electrolyte (CSE) exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 1.88 × 10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature and demonstrates excellent thermal and electrochemical stability. Lithium ion batteries are fabricated by composing composite solid electrolyte, LTO as negative electrode, and NCM622 as positive electrode. Compared with the commercialized polyethylene (PE) separator, the composite solid electrolyte (CSE) has improved initial capacity, capacity retention and rate characteristics of LIBs at room temperature, and also exhibited more stable high-temperature lifespan characteristics even at a high temperature of 80℃. This study suggests a promising way for designing high-performance and high-safety lithium-ion batteries.
