The price of the building materials such as steel, wood, and insulation have recently soared alongside rises in raw material prices. In particular, the rebar price’s frequent fluctuations due to the macroeconomic influences have again hit the highest record of the “rebar shock” in 2008. The increased price causes the same issues as in the past to recur, such as delays and interruptions in construction. It can have an especially adverse impact on small and midsize construction companies that purchase materials under unit price contracts. It impacts small companies more heavily than large enterprises that directly enter into supply contracts with steelmakers and that have various procurement routes. According to the data provided by the Korean Iron & Steel Association, it is believed that the demand for rebar decreased last year due to social distancing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, thus rebar production plummeted. On the contrary, the real-world rebar price has drastically surged due to supply shortages as the construction industry is recovering faster than expected. However, most of the cause analysis in this was conducted after the occurrence of the situations and thus lacked predictive capabilities; unpredicted circumstances may continuously arise with unforeseen variables. It is no exaggeration to say that the construction industry is directly exposed to unknown risks as project periods lengthen and are more heavily affected by various social and economic factors than other industries. Therefore, a study was conducted to utilize deep learning that shows better results than human judgment, speed, and accuracy for efficient cost planning in the context of construction project management. Unfortunately, the amount of data that can be used to predict the price of rebar with deep learning is absolutely insufficient compared to other big data-based machine learning. Additionally, such predictions are difficult because rebar prices reflect social and economic circumstances rather than natural and physical understandings of these materials. Therefore, research was conducted to evaluate short-term rebar price predictions through deep learning and to improve prediction accuracy. In addition, considering the duration of the construction project, various methodological attempts were made step-by-step to expand the prediction range. This approach was used because it was necessary to predict the long-term perspective through deep learning. The first attempt to expand the prediction range was to reconstruct a time unit in time series data based on the fact that the short-term prediction range varies according to the time interval of the input data seen in deep learning. However, the prediction range has expanded to a limited extent as input data is lost in proportion to the range increase. Consequently, only a three-month prediction was carried out. The second attempt was a recursive prediction in which short-term predictions were performed by setting all data characteristics in a dataset as the prediction targets and the generated value was then added to the original dataset to predict the next point. This methodology has a feature that the number of objects to be predicted increases as the number of data characteristics increases; thus, the dataset was configured to include the Producer Price Index (PPI) for rebar, Import Price Index (IPI) for rebar, and rebar price, indicating a high correlation in the data characteristics based on the Pearson Correlation Analysis. The prediction errors started to increase after five months of PPI forecasting, and consequently, the errors in the values of IPI and rebar price also increased after six months. Therefore, it is concluded that the effective prediction up to five months ahead had been achieved. As described above, this study aims to develop a process model for predicting values with deep learning based on small-scale rebar price data and to demonstrate the prediction results. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as basic data for future follow-up studies in related fields.
