This study aims to examine the implementation process of action research for Newspaper In Education(NIE) designed to develop writing skills in five-year-old children, and to identify the changes that take place in the students and teachers as a result of the process of action research. In accordance with this purpose, this paper addresses the following research questions.
1. What is the process of action research for NIE to develop writing skills in five-year-old children?
2. What changes were observed in the children as a result of the action research for NIE?
3. What changes were observed in the teachers as a result of the action research for NIE?
The study subjects were 28 five-year-old children enrolled in kindergarten "A" in Seoul from October to December 2019. The research methods included participatory observation, recording of videos and photos, documentation of children's works, children's writing interest test, teachers' reflective journals, and teachers' language teaching efficacy test. The study results are as follows.
First, action research for NIE to develop writing skills in five-year-old children was conducted over 3 processes to examine the writing development of 5-year-old children. In the first process, newspaper materials were supported for children to freely select their writing contents, and teachers planned and supported so that children could use the selected photos on their own for writing activities, in order to solve the problem of children's low participation in writing activities and the need to provide various writing materials that arouse children's interest. In the secondary process, children could partner with their preferred classmates and work together on the newspaper topics that they were interested in. In the third process, teachers provided children with newspaper articles that dealt with their current interests, experiences, and lifestyles. These processes were carried out as part of cyclical action research, and the author could observe some positive changes in the children and teachers.
Second, in result of the action research process to develop writing skills of 5-year-old children, it was possible to confirm positive changes by observing the appearance of children interested in writing using newspapers, children who enjoy communicating with peers through newspapers, children who creatively reconstruct newspaper photos and articles.
Furthermore, positive changes were also found in the teachers after this learning intervention was introduced. The teachers grew to be more observant and supportive of the children's participation in newspaper-based writing activities and they acquired more advanced language teaching efficacy.
In the future, it is expected that research related to NIE will be consistently conducted in the educational field, enabling meaningful support from teachers for developing writing skills of children.
