The interest in hydrogen energy is increasing for reasons such as eco-friendliness, energy self-sufficiency and stable economic feasibility, and several countries, including Korea, the United States, Japan, Australia and the European Union, announced policies on the hydrogen economy. Accordingly, hydrogen vehicles and charging stations as well as several hydrogen production facilities are being developed and used. Among them, the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), one of the generation-IV reactor, is a gas-cooled reactor that uses helium as a coolant and graphite as a moderator. It can produce a large amount of hydrogen using high heat energy and catalyst. Produced hydrogen is transported and stored using metal pipes and tanks under high pressure conditions. Currently, four types of tanks including metal materials are being developed and used. In order to explain the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen gas environment, many theories have been proposed, such as hydrogen pressure theory, surface theory and hydrogen compound theory. Among them, the hydrogen pressure theory is the most dominant that hydrogen penetrates into the lattice or small defects inside metal and the metal is broken by the high internal pressure. As a result, mechanical properties such as strain rate and fracture toughness of metal materials degrade and hydrogen embrittlement is particularly occur under high pressure condition. Hydrogen gas is transported and stored under high pressure in a tank, and degradation of material properties due to hydrogen embrittlement may cause damage to structures and leakage of hydrogen gas during transport and storage. In this paper, the material properties of Al6061-T6 and CrMo steels which are materials of hydrogen tank and API-X70 steel which is candidate material of hydrogen gas transport pipe were evaluated with experiments and simulations under noble and hydrogen gas conditions using the extended finite element method (XFEM). Experiment and simulation conditions for each material were set according to the current or planned use. Experiments under hydrogen gas condition have various constraints such as sealing and ventilation, so crack propagation analyses were performed on various sizes of fracture toughness (CT; Compact Tension) specimens using the results of basic material properties such as slow strain rate tensile(SSRT) test. Prior to main simulation, the reliability of the XFEM was verified by performing a crack propagation analyses on the SM490A material specimen under atmospheric condition and tungsten considering recrystallization and comparing it with the experiment. True stress-strain data and damage parameters for each material and condition were derived by performing the simulation for smooth and notched round bar specimens using a validated method. The determined parameters were applied to the CT specimen to perform crack propagation simulation, and a fracture resistance curve (J-R curve) was calculated according to ASTM E1820-13. The calculated JQ or JIC was compared with the experiment, and the effect of hydrogen gas was evaluated through comparison under noble and hydrogen gas conditions.
