At present, Korea faces a reduction in labor population, an increase in aging population, a decrease in fertility rate, and the importance of one’s work-life balance. The convergence of Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile and AI technology helps to maximize digital information utilization. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) makes it possible for digital laborers to do simple and routine tasks without any direct human intervention. In the 4th industrial revolution era when the RPA is applied to works, digital labor becomes more important.
This study examines issues on the effect of RPA and compares perception gaps between managers and workers at domestic small and medium sized companies. At first, in-depth interviews with five managers and five workers were conducted and their perception was found to be diverse. In particular, managers and workers showed a noticeable difference in their opinions on ‘job insecurity’ and ‘business competence’. The difference could generate negative influence on the introduction of RPA. For this reason, a questionnaire survey was conducted additionally for the quantitative analysis on their perceptions. On the basis of the main issues verified through in-depth interviews, 56 questions were developed. Responses from 84 managers and 197 workers (total 281) were collected online. Co-orientation model was applied to the seven issues validated through exploratory factor analysis (job insecurity, commercialization competence, collaboration, work process speed, innovation activity, job satisfaction, and procedural justice). Three measures of agreement, congruence, and accuracy were used for identifying perception gaps. This study found that both managers and workers had some worries about ‘job insecurity’, and both groups were found to have misunderstanding of each other. In particular, managers inaccurately conjectured that workers would show significantly lower worries about ‘job insecurity’ than themselves. In general, workers showed more positive perception on the other issues than managers. Workers’ perception on ‘business competence’, ‘collaboration’ and ‘innovation’ was significantly higher than managers’. Managers accurately conjectured that workers would have more positive perception on ‘business competence,’ ‘task completion time’, ‘innovation’, ‘job satisfaction’, and ‘procedural justice’ than theirs. In comparison, workers accurately conjectured managers’ perception on business competence’, ‘collaboration’, ‘innovation’, and ‘job satisfaction’ was significantly lower than theirs. The study results strongly imply that managers should communicate with workers on the issues of RPA adoption. Before and during the RPA implementation, managers and workers together need to define clearly the roles and responsibilities of digital laborers (RPA), to document work procedures and standardize works through an appropriate process mining process, and thereby to maximize the effect of RPA. At present, RPA has yet to be expanded to small and medium sized companies in Korea. The questionnaire survey was conducted at the point of such time. For this reason, respondents with RPA experiences were minor in the survey. Nevertheless, this study gives the following implications: From the academic point of view, previous studies related to RPA focused on the introduction of RPA technology and the validation of the RPA effect after its application to particular tasks in an organization. This study verified the perception gaps between managers and workers through the questionnaire survey on the effects of RPA. From the practical point of view, RPA can be a positive driving force to improve the business performance through digital transformation at small and medium sized companies in Korea. The diffusion of the culture to share the digital experiences will lay the foundation for the RPA expansion and the enhancement of digital competence.
