Zn-Al-Mg alloy coatings produced by hot-dip galvanization process have shown superior corrosion resistant, as compared to conventional Zn (GI) coatings because simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O), a corrosion product in a stable state, is densely generated by the additive element Mg in these coatings. Microstructure, corrosion resistance and applications of these alloy coating strongly depends on Mg and Al contents as well as the process conditions of hot-dip galvanizing. In this study, the crystal orientation distribution of the primary Zn phase of the Zn-1.7wt%Al-1.4wt%Mg coating layer, which is being considered for application to automotive steel sheets, was analyzed. Specifically, the Scheil solidification behavior of the hot-dip galvanized layer was investigated through Thermo-Calc calculation, and the cause of the primary Zn grains separated by the Zn+MgZn2 eutectic structure having the same crystal orientation was analyzed through electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). Using a hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) simulator equipped with a Zn-1.7wt%Al-1.4wt%Mg plating bath, a 0.8 mm thick full-hard cold-rolled steel sheet was charged into a 470 oC plating bath for 5 seconds to prepare a coating layer. The thickness of the coating layer was controlled to be from 15 to 20 μm. The microstructure of the coating layer was analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). On the other hands, after annealing the above plated steel sheet in an atmosphere of 320 oC N2-10%H2 for 12 hours, the microstructure and crystal orientation of the coating layer were also analyzed in the same method. For comparison with the coating layer manufactured in the HDG simulator, the same analysis was performed on the in-situ Zn-1.5wt%Al-1.5wt%Mg coated steel sheet manufactured in the continuous galvanizing line (CGL). Using Thermo-Calc software, it was confirmed that the ternary eutectic phase of Zn, Zn+MgZn2, Zn+MgZn2+Al was formed, and the microstructure of the coating layer was confirmed through SEM. In addition, in the case of Zn-1.7wt%Al-1.4wt%Mg steel sheet coated through simulator through EBSD analysis, it was confirmed that primary Zn was nucleated on the surface of the coating layer to have strong [0001] basal orientation and analyzed at high magnification it was confirmed that even the adjacent primary Zn and the eutectic Zn located between them have the same crystal orientation. In contrast, in the Zn-1.5wt%Al-1.5wt%Mg steel sheet coated on the CGL line, it was confirmed that the primary Zn had different crystal orientations. Through these differences, the crystal orientations of the two steel sheets were compared.
