The purpose of this study is to provide a basis for deciding to wear weightlifting shoes according to the purpose of weight training by analyzing the effect of wearing weightlifting shoes on muscle activity and movement differences during conventional deadlift movement. This study has selected 17 males in their 20s who have been doing weight training for more than 6 months (age: 24.69±2.89 yrs., height: 175.18±4.81 cm, body mass: 73.54±7.87 kg, 1RM: 142.47±28.39 kg). Subjects were asked to perform deadlift movement with wearing weightlifting shoes(WS) and barefoot(BAF) in random order. The weight of 80% of the 1RM measured in advance was used as their loads, and performed 3 times for each condition. Deadlift motion was analyzed by using 8 infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualisys, Sweden) and EMG (Noraxon, USA), and at this time, the data was acquired by setting the sampling rates to 100 Hz and 1,000 Hz, respectively. In order to statistically verify the variables, a paired t-test was performed, and all statistically significant levels were set to α=.05. The results of this study are as following. First, for the phase 1 which was before knee pass event, WS condition revealed significantly increased in ROM at knee joint, hip joint and trunk segment compared with BAF. It also showed a tendency to increase in ROM for the ankle joint at WF compared with BAF. Second, for the phase 2 which was after knee pass event, WS condition revealed significantly decreased in ROM at ankle joint and knee joint compared with BAF. It also showed a tendency to decrease in ROM for the hip joint at WF compared with BAF. Third, WS condition showed a tendency to decrease in muscle activation of gluteus maximus, and rectus femoris compared that of BAF. Fourth, WS condition revealed significantly decreased in tibialis anterior muscle activation in phase 1, and significantly increased in gastrocnemius in phase 2 compared with BAF.
According to the results of this study, WS condition revealed less muscle activation to perform deadlift compared with BAF. With this results we may confirm that wearing weightlifting shoes may conduct efficient deadlift movement. Therefore, in case of performing deadlift with purpose of increasing weight for record, wearing weightlifting shoe is preferred. In case of the movement with purpose of strengthen muscle, it is better to perform with barefoot or wearing low-heeled sneakers.
