In this study, the origins of the ancient idea of Fengshui were connected to residence, the nature, astrology and others, were chronologically categorized into Pre-Qin(先秦) and Qin(秦) and The Han(漢) times and examined, and the Fengshui ideology and its system of organization of 『Zhaijing(宅經)』 as a housing Fengshui book and 『Zhangshu(葬書)』 as a grave Fengshui book were investigated. Today's generalized definition of Fengshui first came from 『Zhangshu』, and before 『Zhangshu』, there were a variety of names, such as Buzhai(卜宅), Xiangzhai(相宅), Xiangdi(相地), Geography(地理), land xiangzhai(土地相宅), Gamyeo(堪輿), Xingfa(形法), Watch geography(相地理), Zangshu(葬術), Qingnang(靑囊), Qingwu(靑烏) and etc. As for the characteristics of the nature and the idea of Fengshui in the ancient times, mountains, water, soil, rain, wind, and sunlight were considered to be the natural phenomena affecting Fengshui ideology, and the thought of Fengshui was based on environmental determinism that the natural phenomena were closely related to human life including a person's personality. With regard to the features of astrology and Fengshui thought in the ancient times, it was recognized that astrology, geography and human affairs, that is, Samjae, were closely connected to one another, and the thought of Fengshui begun that took the placement of astrology as a model, and tried to copy it. Regarding the characteristics of residence, the nature and the Fengshui ideology in the ancient times, the types of residence developed from a rock cave(岩洞) to a tree house(巢居), a soil cave(穴居) and then to a half-cave(半穴居), and the Fengshui ideology of those times was probably a kind of Fengshui for survival to avoid animals, cold and flood and to get water and foods. The features of the ideology of housing Fengshui in the Pre-Qin era are as follows. In the literature, the first record of Xiangzhai(相宅) is in Chapter 『Zhaogao(召誥)』 of 『Shangshu(尚書)』, and it can be found that in the process of Zhou(周)’s pushing ahead with taking Luoyi(洛邑) as the second capital city in order to prepare for the invasion by the western barbarians after having established Haojing(鎬京) as the first capital city in B.C. 1046, Xiangzhai was conducted respectively in the order of Taibao(太保), Zhaogong(召公), and Zhougong(周公). 『Wenwang(文王)』 in 『Shijing(詩經)』 has the record that when Haojing(鎬京) was selected as a capital city, King Wen chose it by practicing divination himself, and 『Gongliu(公劉)』 shows that bearings, mountains, and the flow of water were regarded as important for Xiangzhai. In conclusion, the feature of the housing Fengshui in the Pre-Qin times was the viewpoint of environmental determinism. The idea of grave Fengshui in the Pre-Qin era had the following characteristics. 『Zhouli(周禮)』 tells us that the government administered the positions related to funeral rites, such as Suishi(遂師), Zhangshen(掌蜃), Zhongren(冢人), Mu daifu(墓大夫) and others. In addition, 『Liji(禮記)』 says that each country had different materials for a king’s coffin, and different period of a funeral, size of a tomb, height of burial mound, thickness and size of inner and outer coffins and Unsap and Bulsap depending on one’s status. On the other hand, regarding a funeral, Confucian scholars including Confucius and Mencius mostly had the stance of Hujanggusang(厚葬久喪, a generous funeral and long mourning), but Motzu insisted on a frugal funeral while giving the examples of the funerals held by the three kings, King Yao(堯), King Shun(舜) and King Yu(禹), in the ancient times, and emphasizing that a frugal funeral had been the law by King Cheng(成), the second king of Zhou(周) dynasty. From this, we can see that in the ancient times and at the early stage of Zhou Dynasty, there was no Hujanggusang and a funeral was held in a simple way, but Hujanggusang had become into fashion since the Spring and Autumn period and had become a serious social problem. The housing Fengshui in the Qin(秦) and Han(漢) era had the following characteristics. Until the early stage of Pre-Qin, some professional writings on Fengshui, such as 『Kan yujin gui(堪輿金匱)』 and 『Gongzhai dixing(宮宅地形)』, were written, but they were not published as independent books, but included in the books about the Five Elements or Xingfa. According to 『Shui hu di qing mu zhu jian(睡虎地秦墓竹簡)』, people in Qin(秦) dynasty thought that fortunes could become different depending on the location of a house, the flow of water, and the location of a storeroom, a guestroom, a main room, a stable, a main building and a separate building. 『Huainanzi(淮南子)』 in the early stage of Pre-Han shows that people of those times had the viewpoint of environmental determinism that the natural environment of soil decided a person’s disease, personality and even voice. Wang Chong in 『Lunheng(論衡)』 in Later Han criticized Tuzhaishu(圖宅術) for considering the Sangsaeng and Sanggeuk relation of the Five Elements between a house and its owner’s family name and the taboo on the extension in the western direction, one of Four Huis(四諱). The features of the grave Fengshui ideology of Qin(秦) and Han(漢) era were as follows. 『Lu shi chun chu(呂氏春秋)』 shows that a funeral was developed from a dutiful son’s respect for his parents and an affectionate parent’s not forgetting his/her child. 『Mengtian liechuan(蒙恬列傳)』 in 『Shiji(史記)』 is the first record related to veins of the earth. According to 『Rizhe liechuan(日者列傳)』 in 『Shiji』, it seems likte that, at that time, a fortune teller was one of occupations and got attention from common people, but didn’t gain the attention of the ruling class or help them judge something, and Fengshui activities were active, but their theories were still not enough. The characteristics of the Fengshui idea and the organizational system of 『Zhaijing(宅經)』 were as the follows. In 『Zhaijing』, which has been recognized as the first book of housing Fengshui, 24 bearings are categorized into housing Fengshui and grave Fengshui, and then divided once again into a Hyeonghwa bearing and a Fudeo bearing depending on Tao(道) of Yin and Yang, and a separate date for repair is designated appropriately for each bearing, so it offers a Xiangzhai(相宅) system suggesting the ways to bring about good luck and avoid ill luck with regard to a house as the living foundation. First, the Fengshui concepts and Xiangzhai system of 『Zhaijing』 are based on the theory of the balance of Yin and Yang of the ancient times, and Xiangzhai is emphasized as the part in which the Yin-Yang theory is demanded most among the five areas of Shushu(術數). Many ideas were adopted from Myeonglihak(命理學) to the Fengshui concepts and Xiangzhai system of 『Zhaijing』, such as Sanggeuk and Sangchung of Cheongan and Jiji, Wangsanghyususa(旺相休囚死) of the Five Elements(五行), the harmony between Cheongan and Jiji, the theory of the harmony among the Five Elements and many others of Myeonglihak. 『Zhaijing』 has succeeded the Heaven command ideology(天命思想) and ruling-with-times ideology(時令思想) of the ancient times and Dong Zhongshu’s heaven and humans sympathy theory(天人感應論). Moreover, in the background of Oheoosil thought(五虛五實論) of 『Zhaijing』, which puts emphasis on balance and harmony in the relation between a house and its residents and between the size of a house and the number of domestic animals, lie the frugality thougth(節儉思想) of Mohism and the ancient times and Huanglao(黃老) thought which was popular in the early days of Han Dynasty. Yet, 『Zhaijing』 divides it in too uniform and dichotomous a way in the series of procedure from the separation of housing from grave of the 24 bearings to the division between Huohuo(禍禍) bearing and Fudeo(福德) bearing to the designation of a date for repair and to the judgement of good or ill luck. Furthermore, as for the relationship between the nature and humans, 『Zhaijing』 takes the view of a deterministic causal relation that the nature as a house determines the fortunes of a person in it. The feasibility of this uniform dichotomy and the deterministic view of 『Zhaijing』 is being questioned, and the effectiveness of Xiangzhai system is causing controversy. The Fengshui idea and the composition system of 『Zhangshu(葬書)』 have the following features. The keys to the Fengshui ideology and Xiangmu system of 『Zhangshu』, which has been acknowledged as the first book of grave Fengshui, can be said to be sympathized relation(同氣感應論) and the idea of a dragon(龍), an acupuncture point(穴), soil(砂) and water(水), and liveliness(生氣) are the key words of the Fengshui idea of 『Zhangshu』. In 『Zangshu』, Shengwangmu(生旺墓) of the Five Elements(五行) in 『Huainanzi(淮南子)』 and the concept of Jangsaengji in Myeonglihak were adopted as the condition of Sasinsa. Guo Pu had profound knowledge of Myeonglihak, yet, unlike in the book on housing Fengshui, 『Zhaijing』, he adopted and applied only the concepts of Sangsaeng of the Five Elements and Jangsaengji among the place name system of Myeonglihak in 『Zhangshu』, the book about grave Fengshui. sympathized relation(同氣感應論) of Zhangshu had not been created newly, but it was the theory in which liveliness(生氣) of the Five Elements was added to sympathized relation(同類感應論) of the ancient times, for instance, that in 『Zhouyi(周易)』, 『Zhuangzi(莊子)』, 『Chunqiu Fanlu(春秋繁露)』 and etc. The eight-bearing system of 『Zangshu inherited of Hucheon bearing picture of 『Zhouyi』. 『Zangshu』 says that both an undeserved funeral and too frugal a funeral can bring about illl luck, therefore, 『Zangshu』 can be said to have a neutral position betwteen a Confucian fancy funeral and a Mohistic frugal funeral. Meanwhile, in 『Zhangshu』, the relation among the nature, ancestors and descendants is regarded as a deterministic causal one, but possiblism that understands it as a mutual community sharing the same destiny is also necessary.
