Graphene is one of the two-dimensional materials in which carbon atoms are composed of a honeycomb structure and have a one-atom-thick. Since it has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, superior mechanical properties, and good chemical stability, many researchers conduct a variety of studies for electronics, optoelectronics, energy storage applications, energy harvesting devices, biomaterials, etc. Graphene without defects has chemically stable properties, which leads to be hard for functionalization. Various studies have been conducted to overcome these shortcomings and apply them to new fields. However, additional properties can be easily imparted by the chemical treatment in the surface or edge regions of graphene. Through this chemical modification, various graphene-based materials, such as doped graphene, G-O, composites are synthesized for application in many research fields. G-O, which is an oxide form of graphene, has various oxygen functional groups such as epoxy groups and hydroxyl groups on the basal plane and carboxyl groups and carbonyl groups on the edges. Since the G-O shows a hydrophilic property by oxygen functional groups, it can be stably dispersed in water. This makes it possible to apply a solution-based process. In addition, because the oxygen functional groups in G-O are very reactive, they react with other catalysts or metal particles to produce a metal or metal oxide complex. The G-O has an electrically insulating property, unlike graphene. As adjusting oxidation degree, the electrical property can be controlled from metal, which corresponds to graphene, to insulator like graphene oxide. In this thesis, graphene-based material was synthesized by chemical modification to apply various applications. First, the viscosity of G-O colloids is increased by mixing graphene oxide formed by electrophoretic deposition. The large increment of the viscosity of G-O colloids could be acquired by increasing G-O concentrations, applied voltages, and process times. In addition, G-O gel (or paste) was able to be obtained. Second, a well-dispersed G-O/Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) composite solution was synthesized, and the optical and electrical properties of reduced G-O/Na2SiO3 (rG-O/Na2SiO3) composite films were compared with those of the G-O. As a result of forming the rG-O/Na2SiO3 transparent conductive film using the synthesized G-O/Na2SiO3 solution, it was confirmed to have lower sheet resistance and higher transmittance than those of the rG-O film. Third, graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD graphene) film was oxidized using Hummers agents (KMnO4, H2SO4), and their structural, optical, and electrical properties were investigated. The electrical property of the oxidized CVD graphene films can be controlled from the conductor to the insulator. Finally, ZnO nanorods were grown on oxidized CVD graphene films and the density of ZnO was improved compared to that grown on CVD graphene.
