Architecture has developed through historical, social, and cultural contexts, thereby reflecting the flow of the era. Although the architectural styles are classified by the expression method like this, as society develops rapidly, there currently exist various expression methods and methodologies worldwide in architecture, thus making it difficult to define modern architecture. Nevertheless, architecture is a fundamental element of human life, which has developed around humans from the time of the Renaissance to the present, and modern architecture is currently developing with a basic concept of welfare in order to satisfy various human needs. The aging population is a serious issue in which the entire world is facing and affects all domains of society. The advanced countries, which experienced aging society earlier than South Korea, exerted to address this issue, and the case studies of those advanced countries were examined in domestic to address problems and prepare countermeasures. In order to cope with aging, developed countries demonstrate the welfare and architectural characteristics according to the timing, and the concept of an ‘aging in place’, which means that the elderly continue to live in a local community, has now been emphasized and various elderly housings have been developed to implement this.
Denmark tried to address the issues related to the poor class from the mid of 18th century at the local government level, and as the population aging progressed in the 1940s, the facilities or houses for the elderly were developed. The facility protection in the early stage, which forcedly quarantined not only the early elderly but also the disabled and poor children in the isolated and poor large-scale facilities that are located in the outskirts, became a social problem. Therefore, the community concept became emphasized, and the overall systems were reformed in order to protect those people based on local societies or communities and housing construction has begun. In the 1970s, Denmark developed and established the co-housing that is being used across the world, and this co-housing, which restores community functions and guarantees privacy, began to be highlighted as a new housing model for the elderly. Since then, Denmark has promoted a new welfare housing for the elderly, by changing their perception on the elderly to the subjects of life, not the objects of protection and by putting forward the principle of protecting the elderly that helps them restore self-reliance and self-identity through community life. Accordingly, the population aging is effectively coped with by establishing and flexibly arranging Ældreboliger, Plejeboliger, and Friplejeboliger considering the characteristics of the region and the elderly.
This study sought effective countermeasures for the aging problem based on the elderly welfare housing of Denmark. Moreover, in order to understand the purpose of the development of the elderly welfare housing, the concept of welfare in Denmark was investigated and the architectural characteristics of each type of housing for the elderly were analyzed. The important thing of the elderly welfare housing in Denmark is not to make the mental and physical functions of the elderly normal by accommodating them in as many spaces as possible, but to provide a stable daily life like the ordinary public by creating the social roles and exchanges of the elderly while ensuring the privacy of the elderly and respecting human rights. In other words, this study aims to make the elderly enjoy their daily lives and restore their own value and identity by providing a unit plan that guarantees the privacy of the elderly and respects human rights, and by planning a common space that forms a community.
Through this study, it was elucidated that modern architecture is developing around welfare based on human needs, and the elderly welfare housing in Denmark reflected the historical, social, and cultural characteristics and welfare of Denmark in unit planes and public spaces. In this regard, this study provides the concept of welfare and the basic direction of housing in the future housing development for the elderly in South Korea, and proposes a measure on how to reflect welfare architecturally. In addition, it also suggests a follow-up study that can identify a variety of methods to represent welfare architecturally by analyzing the characteristics of not only the buildings for various purposes such as office work and culture but also the users.
