Design Thinking Education Based on Reflective Thinking in J. Dewey
This study began with the awareness of the question, 'How can we develop the perspective to see the problem as a problem?' through insight. To solve the problem, the aim of this dissertation is to find a way to systematically educate elementary school students on design thinking capabilities through the reflective thinking stage proposed by John Dewey. His five-step reflective thinking process is divided into 문제 problem recognition 가설 hypothesis setting 현황 status survey 가설 hypothesis review 가설 hypothesis verification. This can be said to explicitly reveal the thought process that intelligent humans go through without knowing to solve the problem. Dewey thought that if children were provided with practical experience or problem situations to repeatedly practice the scientific problem-solving process, they would have a habit of developing thinking skills and solving problems in a higher level. That means that when you meet a new problem situation, you develop the ability to accurately identify the problem, find the cause, and find a clear solution. Of course, problem-solving skills can be developed through trial and error, but a practice course is needed to reduce waste and increase effectiveness at the educational level. In chapter II, I analyzed the exact meaning contained in the terms of design and design thinking. In the past, 'design' was commonly used in art, clothing, industry, and architecture as a meaning of 'design' or 'plan'. In the 21st century, the meaning should be changed to the concept of 'design thinking'. In addition, the concept of design thinking was considered in relation to five aspects of convergent thinking, qualitative thinking, and the concept of insight. First, design thinking requires convergent thinking in that knowledge and information are integrated and fused into flexibility and flexibility as needed. Design thinking is the result of reconstructing and integrating knowledge in various fields, or convergent thinking, rather than collecting fragmentary information from various forms of academic aspects which are biological, philosophical, socio-cultural, psychological, and brain science aspects. Based on this convergent thinking, design thinking can be said to be a task of creating new value. Second, design thinking had a deep relationship with qualitative thinking. Design thinking does not solve problems only with rational knowledge in problem situations, but begins with empathy felt through qualitative thinking. Design thinking should start with a state where you can fully feel the surrounding situation surrounding the problem, the degree of problem in progress, the psychological level of people facing the problem, and the culture. Therefore, design thinking requires the fusion of rational thinking and qualitative thinking. Third, the relationship between design thinking and insight was examined. The moment when insights arise in design thinking can be seen as a point where problems are solved in problem situations. These insights require an accurate understanding or grasp of the problem, and appear through the process of accurate analysis, reservation of judgment, and prediction through reflective thinking. Understanding, analysis, and prediction in design thinking are the results of the process of making a good design. Therefore, design thinking can be said to be a synthesis of insights. In chapter III, I examined the necessity of design thinking education and the necessity of convergent operation, and investigates the current status of design thinking education. First, in order to reveal the necessity of design thinking education, the curriculum during the 1st to 3rd Industrial Revolution was introduced. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is not just necessary to consume memorized knowledge, but to create new knowledge based on innovative, integrated, and creative thinking, and to communicate and collaborate with others. Therefore, design thinking education based on convergent thinking has become a necessity in this era, not as a design education as a professional education, but as a general design education, not an option. Next, to understand the concept and necessity of convergent design education, the convergent operation of knowledge ecological, philosophical, socio-cultural, psychological, and brain science aspects was considered by substituting the characteristics of convergent thinking in the five fields presented above. Finally, the actual condition of design thinking education was analyzed. First, three representative design thinking processes were introduced: Stanford-IDEO's process, Stanford d-school's process, and HPI D-School's design thinking process model. Second, the actual status of design thinking education in each country was analyzed. Third, the current status of design thinking education for children was examined. Design thinking education needs to be expanded not only for adults, but also from infancy to elementary and middle and high schools, and design should now be understood as a universal characteristic related to human life as a whole, not a simple art perspective. In chapter IV, I presented five procedures necessary for Dewey's design thinking education program through reflective thinking and specific operation methods accordingly. In section 1, I examined Dewey's reflective thinking. The reason Dewey said reflective thinking is a real thought is because he highly appreciated the objectivity of scientific inquiry. The most rational and logical thinking derived by science is reflective thinking. In section 2, I summarized Dewey's five-step process of reflective thinking. Step 1 is the problem recognition stage, where children and students feel difficulties or difficulties in problems of interest or interest. Step 2 is a temporary hypothesis-setting stage in which the problem is tentatively interpreted, various solutions are devised based on prior experiences and various data, and the results of each solution are predicted. Step 3 is the current status survey stage, which closely investigates, explores, and analyzes all considerations that help define and clarify the nature of the problem at hand. Step 4 is a hypothesis review stage, which elaborates ideas by consistently and accurately refining tentative hypotheses. Step 5 is a stage of hypothesis verification and refers to a kind of experimental verification or verification of the estimated idea. In section 3, I presented a program to realize design thinking education based on Dewey's five stages for children, and introduced examples of actual education accordingly. Design thinking education based on reflective thinking proceeds in five stages: . In the first stage of Discovering Problem, the child started by discovering the actual problem himself. In the second stage of Setting Hypothesis, when a problem is found through diffuse thinking, a problem definition sentence is written. In the third stage of Research of Data, by synthesizing, analyzing, and evaluating data on the subject, one's thoughts were specified through activities to write down solutions to ideas and draw pictures together. In the fourth stage of Production of Work, the shaped ideas were not left at the idea level, and the models were converted into directly implementable or verifiable models. In the fifth stage of Completion and Exhibition of Work, the produced work was displayed so that many people could see it. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, design thinking education is clearly a convergent activity that can actually apply knowledge related to various other subjects such as art and mathematics and science. However, when children need design education, design education does not simply mean the subject knowledge itself that knows design. Design thinking education is a convergent education for good design, and in other words, it can be said that it is an education for design thinking by design thinking. This study would be significant in that students have found a way to bring about a change in their qualitative perspective by demonstrating excellent problem-solving skills in the problem situation given to them. However, there are limitations in that private educational institutions target five lower grades of elementary school and one research teacher conducted practical research. Therefore, by applying this program to design thinking education programs of elementary schools as well as other private educational institutions, follow-up research on the results will be able to develop into a more complete program. I think this design thinking education based on reflective thinking in J. Dewey will be a good program to develop convergent thinking for problem solving, not just rational education in the new era of convergence.
