Language and culture are in an inseparable relationship and have mutual organicity. Language is culture itself and culture is language, which enables to understand the culture of the country by looking into the language used. Koreans greet each other asking “Did you have a meal?” meaning how they do when they meet, or say “Let’s have a meal later” when parting. Besides that, there are a lot of idioms with the Korean word ‘Bap’ meaning a meal, such as ‘to do something for the cost of ‘Bap’, to do as if having a ‘Bap’ and to work for ‘Bap’, and so on. This represents the word ‘Bap’ has an important cultural meaning to Koreans. This study is intended to examine the usage pattern of the idioms of Korean ‘Bap’ appeared in the speech of a native Korean speaker with the purpose of helping foreigners who study Korean to communicate smooth and also proving the cultural value of ‘Bap’ in Korean. With the intention, I chose the scripts of seventeen family dramas as study subjects from the Semi-Spoken Corpus presented by the National Institute of the Korean Language, and analyzed the tendency of both transformations and meanings with the idioms derived from the subject data. The results of the study are as follows. First, after analyzing the Korean idioms ‘Bap’ in a practical way, the idioms that Korean native speakers actually use appears in various transformed forms, and it was found that the reasons for the variations are different depending on the purpose of the speaker. This means it is necessary that the Korean language education should apply more specific and practical contents for foreigners to learn Korean idioms, ‘Bap’ with no misunderstanding. Second, after examining the Korean idioms ‘Bap’ in the way of meaning, the expression turned out to be closely related to the most of the elements constituting our lives, and at the same time of forming the sentiment of Koreans, being the center of Koreans’ identity. It proves that it is reasonable that Korean language education should give more attention to the idioms, ‘Bap’, and emphasizes the Korean education needs to make an integrated approach to both language and culture. Although the linguistic study of ‘Bap’ has enough value for research, it is true that there has been only short of the discussion on it. This study has the meaning that the analysis that has never been handled microscopically was conducted in the practical Korean idioms, ‘Bap’, which contains the fundamental culture of Korea by utilizing the actual language data, corpus. Moreover, I hope that this study contributes to establish the foundation for educational use as basic research data of Korean language education, and also the foundation for the future by encouraging the interest of the related studies.
