The harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused by the massive proliferation of certain species, can cause negative impacts on the environment, human health, and economic activities. Marine benthic/epiphytic dinoflagellates are major components of marine ecosystems, implicated in benthic food webs and species interactions, and contribute to community diversity. In this study, the dinoflagellate genus Ostreopsis was mainly focused. The genus Ostreopsis is widely distributed in both tropical and temperate waters. Since the first report of the genus Ostreopsis in Korea based on the quantitative analysis in 2009, the number of studies increased over the last decade. However, the information on the population dynamics, diversity, and dispersal mechanisms for this species were lacking in Korea. The seasonality of benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis spp. was investigated in temperate Korean coastal sites, emphasizing on their phagotrophy. Sampling was carried out monthly from August 2016 to December 2017 from 4 sites on the southeastern coast of Korea. The high number of Ostreopsis spp. was observed between June and October, when the water temperatures were higher than 19℃, exhibiting a marked temporal seasonality. However, the percentage of Ostreopsis cells containing ingested food particles was not always associated with Ostreopsis abundance. Further, ingested food particles were identified by extracting from single Ostreopsis cells and determining their chloroplast-encoded gene, and these all grouped within the class Florideophyceae, Rhodophyta. The first genetic diversity report was established on Ostreopsis species from Korean coastal waters. Extensive sampling was carried out from several sites along the Korean coast from August 2016 to May 2018 during low tide. All the Korean Ostreopsis species were corresponded to either Ostreopsis sp. 1 or sp. 6, with Ostreopsis sp. 1 being relatively predominant regarding their distribution. Ostreopsis sp. 1 was identified at all locations, and its genetic population structure was investigated. The genetic diversity of Ostreopsis sp. 1 in Korea showed 21 haplotypes and the presumed ancestral haplotype H3 was also present in the Japanese and Russian populations of Ostreopsis sp. 1, reflecting a potential range expansion originating from the ancestral population. Floating plastics are a durable and persistent substratum for the bio-adhesion of micro- and macro-organisms, enabling the dispersal from native to new habitats. In particular, plastics carry various fouling organisms, among which harmful microorganisms could potentially play essential roles in ecological impacts on the marine environment and eventually human health. Marine micro/macro plastics drifting at multiple locations in Korea were collected and analyzed using DNA metabarcoding and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize species composition of the attached eukaryotic microbial communities, emphasizing on harmful and/or toxic dinoflagellates and parasites. The eukaryotic microbial communities on plastic surfaces are distinct from surrounding seawater, implying that plastics serve as an ecological new habitat in the sea, and could contribute to dispersal vectors that facilitate the spread of microorganisms. The result from this dissertation adds to the knowledge of species distribution, dynamics, genetic diversity, population structures, dispersal traits in marine eukaryotic microorganisms, and Ostreopsis species in particular.
