The thesis proposed a development of ultra-high-ductile cement-free composites, consisting of ultra-high-ductile engineered alkali-activated slag composite (UHD-ESC) and ultra-high-ductile engineered geopolymer composite (UHD-EGC), with autogenous healing ability. Plenty of scientific aspects composed of mechanical properties, autogenous healing, and sustainability were investigated comprehensively. The experimental results confirm that both UHD-ESCs and UHD-EGCs had remarkable potentials to become the eco-friendly high-performance concrete that could be applied for modern infrastructures requiring excellent resilience, durability, and sustainability. For the UHD-ESCs, based on single types of activators, optimal mixtures were designed and prepared. Compressive strength and uniaxial tension tests were performed to measure the mechanical properties of each composite mixture. In terms of micromechanics, single fiber pullout test and fiber bridging analysis were also performed using three types of PE fibers-reinforced calcium-based alkali-activated slag matrix. It was found that the interfacial properties between matrix and PE fiber depend on the types of PE fibers. The tension test results were explained by performing fiber-bridging analysis. In addition, a series of experiments, including autogenous healing observation by microscopy and stiffness recovery measured through resonant frequency, was undertaken to evaluate the autogenous healing capacity of alkali-activated slag-based composites. SEM/EDS analysis was utilized to visualize the healing morphology and chemical compositions of the healing materials. The test results showed that AAS-based composites achieved reasonable autogenous healing performance; calcium carbonate was found to be the main healing material in the case of calcium activator-based AAS composites, whereas C-(N)-A-S-H was the dominant healing product generated for sodium activator-based AAS composites. Furthermore, through a Material Sustainability Indicators (MSI) model, the sustainability of the UHD-ESCs was completely demonstrated. For the UHD-EGCs, four mixtures with different ratios of sodium metasilicate pentahydrate (SMP)-to-sodium hydroxide (SH) were designed and prepared at an identical water-to-binder ratio. Polyethylene (PE) fibers were used as reinforcements. Experimental and analytical investigations of mechanical properties, micromechanical analysis, and chemical characterization of UHD-EGCs were performed at both meso- and micro-scales. The UHD-EGC mixtures were found to strain-harden with ultra-high ductility and lightweight behavior. From the chemical analysis, C-(N)-A-S-H and N-A-S-H were verified as the primary geopolymeric products of fly ash-based engineered geopolymer composites. In terms of autogenous healing performance, the high-strength UHD-EGCs (UHD-EGCs) based on slag-blended fly ash reinforced by hybrid PE and PVA fiber were developed and investigated. A series of experiments composed of crack width reduction, stiffness restoration, tensile recovery, and chemical analysis was performed. The test results showed that the UHD-EGCs had modest healing potential on crack width reduction. However, the mixtures using a higher amount of slag achieved good healing capacity demonstrated by the stiffness restoration and tensile recovery, compared to those mixtures using a higher amount of fly ash. Adopting Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques, the dominant healing materials of the UHD-EGC mixtures would be confirmed with the existence of C-(N-)A-S-H gel, minor phase of N-A-S-H/(N,C)-A-S-H gel, and a little hydrotalcite and CaCO3. Similar to the UHD-ESCs, the sustainability of the UHD-EGCs was also highlighted and explained using the MSI model.
