The turbine system of a nuclear power plant is a core facility that expands the high-temperature/pressure steam supplied from the steam generator, converts it into rotational force, and controls the speed of the turbine and the power of the generator by controlling the turbine valves. Since the turbine rotates at high speed, if it exceeds the rated speed and reaches a dangerous speed, the turbine blades become missiles and may damage safety-related equipment in the power plant. To prevent overspeed of the turbine, turbine overspeed protection system is installed and tested periodically whether all turbine valves can be fully closed. Turbine valve test may cause system transients or reactor shutdown due to power fluctuations and cause loss of utilization due to long testing time. By 2010, the test interval for turbine valves in all domestic nuclear power plants was extended to three months. In this study, in order to alleviate the operating risk of the power plant due to the turbine valve test, Reliability evaluation was re-performed by correcting errors in the reliability evaluation technique applied when extending the existing valve test interval and applying the latest operating history and probabilistic safety analysis data. Possibility of extending the valve test interval within the scope of regulatory requirements was reviewed to ensure feasibility through analysis of the turbine missile release frequency and the core damage frequency to GE(Doosan) and GEC(ALSTOM) turbines, which occupy the majority of domestic nuclear power plant turbines. The resulting economic effect was analyzed.
