his study was initiated to analyze the social minority discrimination factor of the new textbook, taking the opportunity that the Korean language textbook of marriage immigrants, which had many gender discrimination elements, was newly published in 2019. Korean textbooks reflect not only Korean but also Korean society and culture to learners, and serve as a compass for Korean life. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest a new direction of the textbooks through analysis of the social minority discrimination elements in Korean textbooks of marriage immigrants and foreign workers and to help establish the right values by preventing immigrants from falling into multicultural ideology.
For this purpose, I examined the theoretical basis of the latent curriculum of the textbooks that have not surfaced, and examined the precedent studies dealing with the latent curriculum of elementary, middle and high school textbooks and Korean textbooks and social minority discrimination.
I analyzed eight textbooks for foreign workers and adult men and women from multicultural families living in Korea and two textbooks for foreign workers. I also analyzed four kinds of teacher guides. I analyzed the textbooks by dividing them into internal and external areas of conversation to identify the factors of social minority discrimination.
As a result, it was found that minority discrimination factors were found in conversation contents and illustrations such as race, nationality, sentence utterance, central sentence utterance, occupation and activity according to character type. The textbook, which is aimed at multicultural families, focused on women's speech, unlike the purpose of the textbook, which was published for male and female immigrants. In sentence and central sentence utterance, female utterances showed a higher proportion of twice and three times than male ones, respectively, indicating gender bias. In the analysis of the proportion of utterances by nationality, it was possible to examine the utterances of characters with various nationalities, but the proportion of black people was only 7.49% compared to white and yellow people in the area outside the conversation. In particular, in the presentation of photographic illustrations, the illustrations of black people were very few. The writers tried to alleviate the racial discrimination of the characters. But it was not reflected in the actual picture.
In the analysis according to the type of characters, foreign married women are described as part-time workers or full-time housewives, but unmarried women and married and unmarried men appear as employed in the company, the textbook classifying foreigners and married women as minorities.
In the contents of the conversation, minority discrimination conversations that lower self-esteem by describing migrants as people with difficult economic circumstances and making them evaluate the level of the group to which they belong in the learner group low were reflected. It was judged that the textbook was providing potential education on "femininity," and it was instilling traditional gender role stereotypes in "women" and "immigrants." Because the textbook presents illustrations of women shopping and wearing skirts, and presents and uses euphemism and fence expressions that women do not express their opinions well.
In the textbook of foreign workers, only male foreign workers excluding female foreign workers appeared to form a dialogue, indicating that there is an element of gender discrimination in the textbook. In the illustration, only yellow people appeared, and no white or black people appeared.
In the dialog, it was judged that the utterance of going to the hospital after work without immediately going to the hospital for an accident that occurred during work contained potential educational content and discriminated foreign workers as minorities.
The most common words in the Teacher's Guide were "diet" and "shopping". Presenting examples such as those who are not on a diet and those who buy unnecessary items can make part of the learner's group a minority without considering personal circumstances.
It is time to reorganize our perception by reexamining the social minority discrimination elements of textbooks at the time when social minority problems such as women and foreigners occur frequently. For marriage immigrants and foreign workers living in Korean society expecting a better life, we must eliminate discriminatory gaze from the false prejudice that they are from poor countries.
I expect that Korean textbooks for marriage immigrants and foreign workers will be developed based on diversity that excludes discrimination and prejudice against minorities.
