This study analyzed the smartphone dependence trajectories over time among adolescents at risk for smartphone overdependence and identified predictors of trajectory group membership to suggest implications for social work practice and policy. This study employed latent class growth analysis to analyze smartphone dependence trajectories and conducted multinomial logistic regression to test the predictors of trajectories. This research analyzed the data collected from the first(2018), second(2019), and third(2020) waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) and examined 609 adolescents who were identified to be at risk for smartphone overdependence. The key findings are as follows. First, three latent classes were identified among the adolescents’ smartphone dependence trajectories: the high-stable group (7.3%), the moderate-increasing group (56.1%), and the low-declining group (36.6%). The emotional, parental, peer, and career factors were included as the independent variables for analyzing the characteristics and predictors of three latent classes, and the findings are as follows: There were significant differences in the independent variables between the groups. Among emotional factors, the prevalence of attention deficit and depression was higher in the high-stable group, and the prevalence of social withdrawal was higher in the moderate-increasing group compared to the low-declining group. Among parental factors, autonomy supportive parenting was high in the low-declining group while coercive parenting was high in the high-stable group. Among peer factors, negative peer relationship was higher in the moderate-increasing group than in the low-declining group. Furthermore, among career factors, career conversation was high in the low-declining group. Second, we identified the predictors of adolescents’ smartphone overdependence trajectories from the emotional, parental, peer, and career factors. The high-stable group had higher attention deficit and depression compared to the low-declining group; the higher the attention deficit and/or depression, the higher likelihood of membership in the high-stable group. Compared to the low-declining group, the moderate-increasing group had significant differences in social withdrawal, autonomy supportive parenting, negative peer relationship, and career conversation. Higher social withdrawal, lower autonomy supportive parenting, greater negative peer relationships, and fewer career conversations increased the likelihood of membership in the moderate-increasing group rather than in the low-declining group. In addition, the more adolescents experienced attention deficit, depression, and coercive parenting, the more likely they belonged to the high-stable group rather than to the moderate-increasing group. Based on these findings, this study discussed comprehensive practice implications, including the need for the level-specific interventions for adolescents with smartphone overdependence, programs that promote adolescents’ learning of building and maintaining positive peer relationships, and systemic education for career development. As for policy implications, this study proposed the expansion of intervention guidelines for smartphone dependence, provision of education on smartphone dependence, and qualitative and quantitative improvement of organizations for smartphone overdependence.
