The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the use of social media on eating disorders in female adolescents, and to verify the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between the two variables. To do this, a survey was conducted on female adolescents attending middle and high schools in Gyeonggi-do and Seoul, and a hierarchical regression analysis was conducted using 369 response data. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, it was confirmed that the intensity of social media usage, passive social media usage, and active social media usage all had a positive effect on eating disorders. Second, it was found that the moderating effect of self-esteem was not significant in the effect of social media usage intensity and passive social media usage on eating disorders, but the moderating effect of self-esteem was significant in the effect of active social media usage on eating disorders. This study supports the results of previous studies that female adolescents' use of social media can affect eating disorders. In addition, in order to prevent female adolescents' eating disorders, it suggests the need to provide education to help them use proper social media and improve self-esteem, and to strengthen support for preventing and healing eating disorders at a policy level.
