The pharmaceutical industry has invested a large amount of money in new drug research and development (R&D) over a long period of time but faces many challenges, such as a productivity crisis caused by the high failure rate of drug development, intensified competition for proven targets, and the development of globally innovative new drugs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a core technology that leads the fourth industrial revolution, and is in the spotlight as a new paradigm to solve challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. In foreign countries, government-led consortiums as well as private collaborations between global pharmaceutical companies and AI platform companies have actively adopted AI platforms for new drug R&D for many years, and a number of drug candidates have reached the stage of clinical trials to test their efficacy and safety. In South Korea the number of collaboration projects among companies, such as joint research activities for discovering new drug candidates, is also increasing, but the local pharmaceutical industry is watching with a conservative attitude toward the introduction of AI-based drug discovery platforms for new drug research. Most studies regarding AI-based drug discovery platforms are related to technology readiness levels of the platforms. However, studies regarding the implementation of AI-based drug discovery platforms, which are at an early stage, are scarce. In this regard, the current study aimed to investigate the structural relationship between factors affecting the implementation of AI-based drug discovery platforms in domestic pharmaceutical companies and new drug research institutes, and to present the implications for the implementation of AI-based drug discovery platforms. The detailed objectives of this thesis were as follows: First it is to investigate the effects of drug discovery task and information quality characteristics and expected risk management factors for AI drug discovery platforms on task technology fit, trust, and perceived value; Second it is to investigate the effects of task technology fit (an objective function evaluation of technology fit), and trust (a cognitive/emotional evaluation through human-technology interactions) on perceived values and intention to adopt AI-based drug discovery platforms; Third it is to derive distinctive characteristics of each group that should be considered when implementing an AI-based drug discovery platform, and to investigate the moderating effects. Through a literature review, drug discovery task characteristics, information quality, and expected risk management factors for AI-based drug discovery platforms were categorized as independent variables. A research model was developed based on the Information System Success Model, Task Technology Fit (TTF) theory, Value-based Adoption Model (VAM), and Trust theory. An online survey was administered to individuals who were working at a drug development-related organization and had experience in introducing AI-based drug discovery platforms or had an understanding of AI technology through education. Valid data collected from 378 out of 451 completed questionnaires were analyzed using empirical analysis. Consequently, 17 out of 23 hypotheses (with moderating effects excluded) were supported, and six hypotheses were rejected. Drug Innovativeness, Drug Effectiveness, and the Explainability of Pharmacological Actions (the drug discovery task characteristics), and Information Richness and Information Accuracy (the information quality characteristics) were found to have significant effects on Task Technology Fit. Information Expertise was found to have no effect on task technology fit. Information Accuracy, Information Expertise, Drug Effectiveness, and Security were found to have significant effects on Trust, whereas the Explainability of Pharmacologic Actions and Reduced Risk of Drug Discovery Failure were found to have no effect on Trust. Drug Innovativeness, Information Accuracy, and Reduced Risk of Drug Discovery Failure were found to have significant effects on Perceived Value, whereas Drug Effectiveness, Information Richness, and Security were found to have no effect on Perceived Value. Task Technology Fit and Trust had significant effects on Perceived Value and The Intention to Adopt. Analyzing the moderating effects between the multiple groups indicated that only Innovation Resistance had a significant effect as a moderating variable, whereas AI Literacy and Management Support did not feature in this regard. This thesis is significant in that it provides a theoretical foundation for studies regarding the attitudes and behavior of employees toward AI products and services at the organizational and individual task performance levels. A value evaluation reference model that considers the objective function of technology fit and a cognitive/emotional evaluation through human-technology interactions is presented. From a policy perspective, it is necessary to expand core infrastructure for data openness and sharing, algorithm advancement, and expert training, and promote AI-based innovative drug discovery projects. Efforts should be directed towards related policy and legal development, so that patents and intellectual property rights can be granted to drugs discovered by AI. This thesis will strengthen global pharmaceutical competitiveness and facilitate the discovery and development of innovative new drugs by supporting the implementation of AI technology in the domestic pharmaceutical industry, and will serve as a conduit for the study and implementation of AI technology in various fields in the future.
