The number of people who regard pets as family members is increasing due to changes in the family structure, such as nuclear familyization, a decrease in fertility rates, and an increase in single-person households. Due to this influence, the size of the pet market is growing steeply, and the number of businesses and workers in the market continues to increase despite the prolonged economic recession. In response, the government is making efforts to lay the institutional foundation for fostering related products and service industries with the expectation that the pet-related market will play an important role in creating new jobs and added value. In particular, the pet service industry, like humans, is expanding into various areas such as customized services according to the life cycle of pets and pet techniques, pet finance, and pet food. Unlike general services, the pet service sector requires qualitative services from workers as well as pet caregivers. The role of manpower in these industrial sites is very important. It is important for workers in the companion animal service industry to acquire flexible vocational skills such as job competencies and service competencies that can be performed on their own at the point of contact with customers along with expertise related to companion animals. In order to flexibly adapt to professional life and perform duties successfully, the cultivation of basic vocational skills is being emphasized. Nevertheless, the curriculums of the Department of Companion Animal Science at domestic universities that train the relevant personnel provide a curriculum focusing on job training through practice. Accordingly, industries are raising the need for basic literacy education to equip workers with the ability to perform services. The purpose of this study is to analyze the priority of educational needs by deriving the difference in importance between the current level of basic vocational skills seen at the time of joining the company and the basic vocational skills of new employees. In addition, through the analysis results, it is a study to present directions for improving the curriculum for fostering talent in the industry by comparing and analyzing basic vocational skills courses opened and operated in the domestic pet department. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted on 153 animal health professionals, pet groomers, and pet trainers with more than 3 years of experience in the pet service industry to analyze educational needs. Based on the top priority of educational needs derived from the results, the curriculum development was proposed by comparing and analyzing the curriculum of the Department of Companion Animal Science at domestic universities. As a result of the study, first, it was confirmed that the current level and important level of new employees from the Department of Companion Animal Science differ overall. Second, educational priorities were derived for basic vocational skills commonly required by workers in each occupation in the pet service industry and basic vocational skills that are required differently by occupation. Third, the curriculum development was proposed by comparing and analyzing the top priority of educational needs of basic vocational skills derived from the research results with subjects operated by the Department of Companion Animal Science in Korea. Finally, academic and practical implications were presented and suggestions for follow-up studies were made.
