The Effect of Intolerance of Uncertainty and Social Comparison on Psychological Burnout of Counselors: multi-group analysis according to the counselor’s career.

The purpose of this research is to test whether there is a mediating effect of social comparison on the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and psychological burnout of the counselor, and to examine the differences according to the counseling career. Counselors use themselves as a tool for the client's growth. So counselors should always maintain good health to prevent burnout. When counselors become exhausted, they get mentally depleted, their empathy and personal sense of achievement decreases, and they experience despair, fatigue, and loss of meaning. Ultimately, counselors who fail to experience a sense of competence in counseling negatively affect their clients. There are many studies that investigated the burnout of counselors as an important subject, but studies on the relationship between the personal characteristics of counselors and burnout have not been sufficiently conducted. Therefore, this study investigated the mechanism between intolerance of uncertainty and social comparison related to burnout, and whether the counselor's career makes a difference. Study participants were counselors who spend more than 30 hours/week on counseling or counseling-related work. A sample of 361 counselors filled out online questionaries about the intolerance of uncertainty, social comparison , psychological burnout. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS 21.0, and Mplus v.7.4 was used to verify whether there is a mediating effect of social comparison on the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and burnout, and a multi-group analysis was done to examine the differences according to the counseling career. The results of this study are as follows: First, there was a positive correlation between intolerance of uncertainty, burnout; social comparison was also positively correlated with psychological burnout. Second, social comparison mediated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and psychological burnout. Third, a significant differences between groups were proved according to differences in counseling experience. This study provides evidence that counselors who have high intolerance of uncertainty are at a higher risk of psychological burnout, and the intolerance of uncertainty increases social comparison, which also increases the risk of burnout. Also, the differences between groups according to counseling career were notable. The findings of this study suggest that counselors who have an intolerance of uncertainty can consider ways to increase patience with uncertainty and reduce social comparison as a way to prevent burnout, and the ways may vary depending on the counselor’s career.
