Factors affecting acceptance and resistance toward Buy Now Pay Later: The Emergence of New Forms of e-commerce consumer credit service원문보기

A dramatic shift toward e-commerce, accelerated by the Covid 19 pandemic, and a decline in credit card popularity among Millennials and Gen Z have fueled the evolution of alternative digital payment methods. Consumers have more payment options than ever before, with many of them providing highly flexible solutions and diverse ways of financing purchases with credit. Credit markets around the world are undergoing profound change. E-commerce consumer credit or lending at the point-of-sale, also known as 'Buy now pay later (BNPL),' has been promoted as a key driver of online sales. BNPL is a payment plan that allows customers to pay for items over time while receiving them as if they were paid in full. The global market for BNPL arrangements is rapidly expanding. Simultaneously, increased credit use has resulted in increased consumer debt and debt collection cases in recent years (Dinero, 2019; Kredinor, 2018), particularly among young adults (Bauer et al., 2021). Jumping on the BNPL bandwagon, Naver Financial, Coupang, and Toss have introduced the Korea version of BNPL since the government granted regulatory sandbox approval to Fintech firms to offer BNPL in 2021, targeting the economically vulnerable, such as young adults or the unemployed, who are unable to qualify for a credit card due to insufficient finances. While the phenomenal rise of BNPL and potential consumer detriment from BNPL are well documented, many of academic literature investigating online consumer behaviour are strictly confined to the context of developing countries such as China and Indonesia with applicability to developed contexts still underexplored. As consumers in developed countries are too accustomed to a particular payment method and satisfied with it, they are reluctant to switch to another payment method that will disrupt their habits (Flood et al., 1994; Bargal et al, 2015), I argue that theoretically-driven research is imperative in explaining the factors affecting consumers’ decision making concerning the adoption of e-commerce consumer credit service and the degree of influence of each factor leading to adoption intention. This study aims to investigate how BNPL credit payment options offered by Naver Shopping and Coupang influence consumers’ willingness to use them and predict psychology of innovation resistance. Drawing upon Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Resistance Theory, a research model was developed and 412 valid questionnaires were collected. The experimental results demonstrate that the factor of compatibility has the most important role in intention to adopt a deferred payment, followed by relative advantage, additional value, and impulsive buying tendency. With regard to resistance, an individual’s impulsive buying tendency and attitude toward credit impact perceived risk, positively and negatively, respectively. Neither personal innovativeness nor prior knowledge has statistically significant effect on perceived risk. Finally, perceived risk and perceived usefulness were found to influence adoption intention mediated through innovation resistance. Furthermore, this study wishes to make a contribution by helping scholars and practitioners understand critical elements affecting adoption and resistance of a deferred payment scheme and exploit the way to an industry-wide checking system in place either by utilizing credit check providers’ existing data or leveraging Open banking and Mydata initiatives.
